Common Habitat: Classrooms, chance meetings, arguments, books, accidents, unexpected opportunities.
Appearance: Usually ordinary.
Danger Level: Variable.
Duration: Often surprisingly short.

A Catalyst is an entity that causes something to happen without necessarily becoming part of what happens next.

A teacher says one sentence.

You hear a song.

Someone challenges an idea you’ve held for years.

You meet a stranger at exactly the right—or wrong—time.

Then something moves.

Catalyst + 1.

The Match

A match doesn’t build the fire.

It doesn’t decide what the fire will become.

It simply provides the moment when something that was already capable of burning finally catches.

People can be like that.

You may have been thinking about changing careers for years.

Then one afternoon someone says:

“Why don’t you?”

That’s it.

Three words.

But something catches.

Catalyst + 2.

The Strange Part

Catalysts are often surprised by their own importance.

They may not remember the conversation.

They may never know what happened afterward.

That’s perfectly normal.

A Catalyst doesn’t need to understand the reaction.

It only needs to cause one.

A book can do it.

A failure can do it.

A friendship can do it.

Even an insult can become one.

Not because the insult was wise—

but because you decided afterward:

“I’m not going to let that define me.”

The source of the change doesn’t always deserve credit for the change.

Sometimes the fire belongs to you.

Field Note

Don’t confuse a Catalyst with a hero.

The two may be the same person.

They may not.

A Catalyst can be wonderful.

A Catalyst can be painful.

A Catalyst can be completely accidental.

What matters is what happens after the encounter.

Identification Test

Look backward at the moments that changed your trajectory.

Ask:

“What actually started this?”

You may find a person.

A sentence.

A book.

A loss.

A coincidence.

A ridiculous afternoon that seemed completely ordinary at the time.

There it is.

The Catalyst.

It may have only been present for five minutes.

Maybe five years.

Either way, its job is finished.

The interesting part is what you did with the spark.

Because a Catalyst can strike the match.

But it doesn’t build the fire.

That’s your work.
