— Rogue Entity Encounters
Common Habitat: Pockets, old notebooks, difficult decisions, long walks.
Appearance: Often mistaken for certainty.
Danger Level: Low.
Primary Function: Direction.
A Compass is an entity that helps you choose a direction without promising that it knows where you’ll end up.
Sometimes it’s an actual compass.
Usually, it’s something else.
A principle.
A promise.
A person.
A sentence someone once told you.
A little voice that says:
“No. Not that way.”
You may not know what the right answer is.
But you know what isn’t yours.
North + 1.
The Strange Part
A Compass doesn’t tell you the destination.
That’s important.
A map says:
“Here is where you are going.”
A Compass says:
“This way.”
You still have to walk.
Maybe you leave a job without knowing what comes next.
Maybe you refuse something that would have been easier.
Maybe you choose the difficult honest answer because something in you says:
“I don’t want to become that person.”
You don’t have a five-year plan.
You have a direction.
Compass + 1.
Sometimes that’s enough.
Field Note
Compasses can be inherited.
A parent teaches you:
“Keep your word.”
A teacher teaches you:
“Be curious.”
A friend shows you what loyalty looks like.
Years later, they’re not there to advise you.
But the direction remains.
You carry it.
Identification Test
When you are uncertain, ask:
“What direction do I want to be facing when this is over?”
Not:
“What guarantees the best outcome?”
Not:
“What will everyone approve of?”
Just:
“Who do I want to be while I walk through this?”
If you can answer that, you’ve probably found your Compass.
It won’t tell you whether the road is easy.
It won’t promise you’ll arrive quickly.
It won’t even promise that you won’t get lost.
It simply gives you something to check when the path disappears.
And sometimes that’s all a traveler needs.
Not a map.
Not a prophecy.
Just enough direction to take the next step.
