Common Habitat: Workplaces, parties, classrooms, ceremonies, difficult conversations.
Appearance: Extremely convincing.
Danger Level: Usually low.
Primary Ability: Adaptation.

A Mask is an entity you wear when the version of yourself underneath isn’t quite suited to the room.

You smile.

You stand up straighter.

You choose your words carefully.

You become professional.

Polite.

Funny.

Quiet.

Confident.

Whatever the situation requires.

Mask + 1.

This isn’t necessarily deception.

Sometimes it’s simply skill.

The Strange Part

Humans wear masks constantly.

The waiter has a mask for customers.

The teacher has one for the classroom.

The parent has one for frightened children.

The person giving a speech has one for the audience.

None of these necessarily mean:

“This isn’t me.”

Sometimes they mean:

“This is one part of me that is useful here.”

A mask can be a tool.

The Old Mask

The trouble begins when you forget why you put it on.

Maybe you learned to be agreeable because it kept the peace.

Maybe you became funny because making people laugh made difficult rooms safer.

Maybe you learned never to ask for help.

Maybe you became extraordinarily competent because being needed felt safer than being known.

Years pass.

The situation changes.

The mask remains.

Field Note

Not every mask needs to be removed.

Some are beautiful.

Some are ceremonial.

Some are professional.

Some let us become braver versions of ourselves.

The important question isn’t:

“Am I wearing a mask?”

Everyone is.

The better question is:

“Can I still take it off?”

If the answer is yes, you probably have a tool.

If the answer is no, you may have a creature living in your wardrobe.

Identification Test

Notice who you become in different rooms.

Then ask:

“Which parts are chosen?”

And:

“Which parts happen automatically?”

There may be wisdom in both.

A Mask can teach you something surprising.

Sometimes the qualities you thought were fake—

your confidence, humor, patience, authority—

are actually qualities you genuinely possess.

You simply learned to access them by putting on the costume first.

Eventually, if you’re lucky, you realize:

the mask was never creating the person.

It was teaching the person what they were capable of becoming.
