Wraith

Common Habitat: Abandoned buildings, empty storefronts, old photographs, places that used to be busy.
Appearance: Familiar, but incomplete.
Danger Level: Low.
Primary Trait: Persistence.

A Wraith is what remains when something is gone—

but hasn’t completely stopped being present.

Consider an old shopping mall.

The signs are still there.

The directory still lists stores that haven’t existed in twenty years.

There is a fountain in the middle that no longer runs.

You can almost hear it.

Not because there is anything supernatural happening.

Because your mind remembers what places like this were supposed to sound like.

Mall + 1.

Then you notice an old photograph in a display case.

People standing where you’re standing.

Children running through the same space.

Someone holding a shopping bag from a store that disappeared before you were born.

Mall + 2.

The building isn’t empty anymore.

It is full of ghosts.

Not dead people.

Dead versions of itself.

That’s a Wraith.

The Strange Part

Wraiths don’t need to be buildings.

A recipe can become a Wraith when nobody remembers how to make it.

A family tradition can become one when the last person who understood it is gone.

A language can become one when nobody speaks it anymore.

A photograph can become one when everyone in it has died.

The thing remains.

The world that gave it meaning does not.

Field Note

Wraiths are often mistaken for ruins.

This is an error.

A ruin is what’s left of a structure.

A Wraith is what’s left of a relationship.

That distinction is important.

An abandoned house isn’t necessarily sad.

But the house where someone grew old, raised children, and celebrated every Christmas may become something else entirely after the family is gone.

The walls are still standing.

The life isn’t.

And sometimes you can feel the difference.

Identification Test

Stand somewhere that used to be full of people.

Look at what remains.

Then ask:

“What used to happen here?”

If you suddenly find yourself imagining footsteps, conversations, music, meals, work, laughter—

you may have encountered a Wraith.

Don’t be frightened.

Wraiths rarely want anything.

They are simply what happens when the world changes faster than its traces disappear.

And perhaps that is why old places can feel haunted even when nothing supernatural is present.

The past doesn’t need to come back.

Sometimes it only needs to leave enough of itself behind to be noticed.
