Nobody remembers what happened between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fourteen-year-old Elias Wren has never considered this especially strange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People enter one at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elias watches his mother enter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then his father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Mara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His younger brother approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elias grabs him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bellweather has an extraordinary history of almost-catastrophes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The town calls itself lucky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe luck has a price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They find the answer\u2014or something resembling one\u2014in an 1847 mayor’s diary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Keeper requires no blood, coin, harvest, nor child. Only time willingly surrendered. One hour from each citizen preserves the settlement against the hour in which calamity would otherwise find them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
