You do not throw things into Mercy Lake because eventually\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the lake gives them back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Fourteen-year-old Mara Vale learns this when she is eight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is standing on the dock with her older brother, Jonah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has just taught her how to skip stones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mara finds a particularly good one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Almost perfectly round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She throws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That one returned every morning for three months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mara asks him what finally stopped it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI put it in a drawer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou didn’t get sober?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody can answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They change it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PLEASE DO NOT THROW OBJECTS INTO MERCY LAKE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

IF SOMETHING RETURNS, CONSIDER WHY IT MATTERS BEFORE DISCARDING IT AGAIN.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One autumn evening, Mara sits beside the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A little girl walks onto the dock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She carries a stuffed rabbit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One ear missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She holds it over the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mara watches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
