\u201cGo back.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither of you will hear the other’s voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is why every trail entering Wrenwood has the same sign:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fourteen-year-old Ren Bell has lived beside Wrenwood his entire life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      That was not the answer she expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Ren points toward the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \u201cHere’s what I know. Mrs. Vale is downstairs. Search teams are looking for you. We have food. We have a map. We know which direction town is. You’re cold and you’ve been here two days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      And designed so that asking anyone else would feel like disobedience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Ren writes the sentence in the Wrenwood search manual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Not because he knows what made the voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      He doesn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Maybe nobody ever will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      He writes it because understanding the origin of a message is not always necessary before learning how to respond safely to one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Wrenwood still speaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Sometimes it comforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Sometimes it frightens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Sometimes it tells the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      That may be the most dangerous part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Because if the forest lied every time, nobody would listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Instead it gives every traveler the same difficult task they face outside the trees:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      A voice enters your awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It sounds convincing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      It may even sound like someone you love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
