The well stands in the center of town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grey stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iron roof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No bucket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No rope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A brass plaque reads:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ASK CAREFULLY.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tourists think it is decorative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People from Saint Mercy know better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On a child’s seventh birthday, they are taught the rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

YOU WERE THERE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mira closes her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat isn’t an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The well says nothing else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has used her question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One lifetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One guaranteed truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You were there.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the walk home, Mira thinks it may have answered perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or badly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or perhaps she still does not understand what she asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She cannot ask again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is all right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For most of her life, Mira believed uncertainty was the distance between herself and the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
