This has been true for at least seventy years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every driver slows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every driver stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The window slides open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attendant asks one question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat are you carrying?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the gate rises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No money changes hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody receives a receipt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And nobody in Glass Harbor seems to think this is strange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Fourteen-year-old Julian Cross has crossed Mercy Bridge hundreds of times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Usually his mother is driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ritual is always the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Window down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attendant appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just Julian and Uncle David returning from Glass Harbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The supervisor looks at him for several seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Same booth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Different attendant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have noticed that you ask too many questions before breakfast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Julian tries his father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just a photograph nobody thought important enough to throw away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Julian recruits Mae Bell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mae’s mother works at the historical society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More importantly, Mae considers rules without explanations a personal insult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They spend Saturday in the archives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mercy Bridge opened in 1901.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before that, travelers crossed by ferry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first toll schedule is ordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Her brother kept it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  She had been driving to confront him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  She said she had been thinking about the watch for the entire trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  The bridge accepted it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  The bridge remains closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Julian understands before his father does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Not because Julian knows what the bridge is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Because he knows his father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  He has watched him pack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Watched him sleep downstairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Watched him stare at his phone without answering messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  For once, his father leaves the sentence there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  No explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  No promise that everything will be fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  No attempt to turn uncertainty into something prettier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Julian realizes this feels considerably safer than all the confident phrases adults had been giving him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Eventually they continue across.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Months later, Julian visits the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Ms. Harrow takes him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  There is a maintenance staircase beneath the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  The stone doorway from the photograph still exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Behind it is a small chamber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Nothing supernatural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Just old bridge machinery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Rust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Inspection records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  On one wall, generations of attendants have written declarations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Not travelers’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Julian reads them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Carved into stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Almost worn away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Julian traces it with his fingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  NO TRAVELER CROSSES EMPTY.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  He thinks of Uncle David.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Walter Reed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  His father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Maybe the bridge is supernatural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Maybe generations of people simply became so committed to an old ritual that they built meaning around coincidences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Maybe the river does something strange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Maybe the stone beneath the bridge was here long before Glass Harbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  There are several maps available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Julian does not yet know which one fits the terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  But he thinks the inscription is probably right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Years later, the town council proposes removing the tollbooth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Traffic has increased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  The booth causes delays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Nobody charges tolls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Nobody can provide a defensible engineering reason for keeping it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Julian attends the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Some residents insist the bridge will become dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Others call them superstitious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Both sides ask Julian what he thinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  He surprises them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  \u201cRemove the booth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Ms. Harrow, now retired, smiles from the back row.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Instead, a sign stands at each entrance to Mercy Bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  No warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Just five words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  WHAT ARE YOU CARRYING TODAY?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                  Most drivers ignore it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
