Sometimes at the end of a hallway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In newer houses, builders put it wherever the owner requests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But every house has one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Red paint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Black iron handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three locks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And nobody opens it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thirteen-year-old Tessa Wynn has known the rule since she was old enough to reach the handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never open the red door.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has also known, for nearly as long, what is behind hers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The laundry room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

This discovery occurs when Tessa is seven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her family moves into a newly built house on Orchard Lane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She watches construction for months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alderwick has buildings from the 1800s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Old courthouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three houses on Mill Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No red doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The practice begins around 1920.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tessa searches newspapers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Town records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alderwick Emergency Ordinance 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the document is missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But one paragraph remains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upon sounding of the municipal alarm, residents shall immediately enter the designated refuge, secure all three locks from within, and remain until the all-clear signal. Under no circumstance should residents investigate voices, knocking, or requests for entry after the third bell.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rowan reads it twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tessa nods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI liked laundry room better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At some point, somebody reversed them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Tessa mentions the bells, Grandma Wynn drops her teacup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her fingers simply stop holding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody remembered that the room was built to protect the person entering it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The town had preserved the warning perfectly\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and forgotten which side of the door was dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, on November 11 at 2:13 in the morning, the first bell rings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tessa wakes instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somewhere in town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third bell begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tessa unlocks the first lock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her father pulls her hand away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second lock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her mother is crying now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because she knows something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because she doesn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside, someone knocks on the front door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three slow knocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone freezes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her father starts toward the entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tessa thinks about all the explanations Alderwick accumulated over a century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something gets in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something gets out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
