The Wheel, The Fire, and The Path Through<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The ancient image of samsara<\/strong> is a wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A great turning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attachment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the wheel turns again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The suffering of samsara is not simply that painful things happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pain is part of being alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deeper suffering is the endless struggle against the nature of existence itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attempt to demand that the river stop flowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attempt to make the changing world become a permanent home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attempt to hold sand and command it not to fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The First Lesson of the Wheel<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The first lesson is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLife is suffering.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deeper lesson is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLife contains suffering, and the way we meet it determines what happens next.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A storm arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The storm is real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But now two different battles are possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first battle is against the storm itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This should not be happening.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This cannot be happening.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is this happening to me?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second battle is within the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What can I learn?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What can I do?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can I move through this?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The storm has not changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the traveler has.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Samsara Loop<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The wheel often turns through a familiar sequence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We experience discomfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We resist the discomfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We create a story about the discomfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story creates more suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The suffering creates more resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wheel turns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person feels pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then thinks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI should not feel pain.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now there are two pains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the war against the pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person feels fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then thinks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI cannot be afraid.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now there are two fears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the fear of being afraid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wheel gains momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Hidden Choice<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The hidden choice is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pain or no pain.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We do not always receive that choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hidden choice is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do I add unnecessary suffering to this pain?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A wound hurts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But repeatedly touching the wound to check if it still hurts creates more damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A fire burns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But grabbing the fire to argue that it should not be hot only creates more injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wise traveler learns:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not every painful thing requires a second battle.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Warrior and the Prisoner<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Two people enter the same dungeon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both are wounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both are afraid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both have lost something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cThis should never have happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

He spends all his strength fighting the existence of the dungeon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cThis is where I am. What is my next move?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

He still hurts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He still struggles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He still wishes things were different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he has something the first traveler does not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prisoner asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy am I here?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The warrior asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat can I do from here?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Fire That Refines<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Fire destroys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fire also transforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same flame that burns the forest can forge the sword.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference is not always the fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it is what enters the fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A piece of iron enters the forge and becomes a weapon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A piece of straw enters the forge and becomes ash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suffering does not automatically create wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pain alone does not create growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The transformation comes from the relationship with the pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Attachment Spell<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

One of the strongest spells in samsara is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis must remain exactly as it is.\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The young must stay young.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The loved one must never change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The body must never age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The moment must never end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The feeling must never fade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The success must never decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But everything that exists is already moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spell attempts to freeze a river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The river does not hate you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The river is simply a river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Liberation Mechanic<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The great spiritual traditions often point toward a similar skill:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learning to participate without clinging.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may love deeply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without owning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may care deeply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without controlling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may pursue excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without believing your worth depends on achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may experience joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without demanding that joy stay forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The open hand can hold a flower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The closed fist destroys it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Choice of Samsara<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the greatest choice inside samsara is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will suffering make you smaller?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or will suffering become part of your path?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same hardship can create:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bitterness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or compassion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or courage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or a doorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pain enters everyone differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The response becomes the place where freedom begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Depth Guide Trial<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

When suffering arrives, the apprentice asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy is this happening?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The student asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat does this mean?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The warrior asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow do I survive this?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The healer asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow do I transform this?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The master asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow can this become useful?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because suffering is good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because pain should be worshipped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But because nothing given to the traveler must be wasted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Wheel Still Turns<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Even the awakened traveler still walks through storms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They still lose people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They still experience grief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They still feel pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freedom is not becoming a stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freedom is no longer being shattered by every change in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tree still bends in the wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it does not hate the wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The river still moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it does not mourn every drop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The candle still burns down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it does not regret giving light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Final Teaching<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Samsara is the wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Life is the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suffering is one of the terrains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan I avoid every difficult road?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWho will I become while walking it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every moment offers a choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cling tighter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or open your hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fight reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or learn to move with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carry the wound forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or allow the wound to become wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wheel turns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The road continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the traveler discovers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal was never to escape the fact that life changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal was to become someone who can walk through change with an open heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is the choice hidden inside samsara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
