The dinosaur has always stood in the entrance hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thirty feet long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teeth like kitchen knives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One foot raised above a bronze plaque:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LATE JURASSIC<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lena knows this because dinosaurs were once the most important thing in her life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At thirteen, she would prefer nobody mention this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But she still knows an Allosaurus when she sees one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And this is not the Allosaurus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a Triceratops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Huge skull.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three horns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Completely different animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lena stops beneath it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her father nearly walks into her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe dinosaur.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhere’s the Allosaurus?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her father looks up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat Allosaurus?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe one that was here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He laughs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLena, this has always been the Triceratops.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She looks at the plaque.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Same bronze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her father continues toward the ticket desk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lena remains beneath the dinosaur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something is wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then she notices the family photograph hanging beside the entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was taken during the museum’s opening in 1951.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hundreds of people stand beneath the central dinosaur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Triceratops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Lena texts Marcus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Museum emergency.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He replies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe did our fourth-grade dinosaur project here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat dinosaur did you draw?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTriceratops.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lena stares at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marcus stares back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then slowly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat dinosaur do you think I drew?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAllosaurus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou complained for two weeks because Mrs. Denton made you draw the same dinosaur as me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marcus starts to answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something has changed in his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Lena stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a glass case containing a silver pocket watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RECOVERED AFTER THE COURTHOUSE FIRE, 1912<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Lena says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marcus sighs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His mother remembers whichever version currently exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lena picks one up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery few years, somebody doesn’t change with it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe don’t know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lena is beginning to hate that sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat do you do with them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Pell gives him a tired look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe don’t murder children, if that’s where your mind went.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They continue between the shelves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the museum changes something that matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lena comes downstairs one morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her father is making pancakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a woman sitting at the kitchen table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She looks up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMorning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lena stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The woman smiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Lena remembers both lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her father remembers only one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lena goes upstairs and cries for almost an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One name catches Lena’s eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claire Moreno.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because another surgeon joined the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because he moved to Wrenfield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because the university hired his wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each difference leads to another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no isolated change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No single switch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A world is connected to itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lena cannot simply select:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mom lives.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She must select everything that made that possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Including things she has not discovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Including consequences she may never know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her mother is waiting at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lena desperately wants this version of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That frightens her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because wanting something makes evidence very easy to organize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She hears footsteps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marcus sits beside her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat are you going to do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For once, the answer feels correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across the gallery, a display light flickers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A painting changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither child recognizes it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A vase becomes a bowl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Triceratops above them creaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its skull is changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Horns shrinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jaw extending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bones rearranging one at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within seconds, an Allosaurus stands above them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lena remembers being six years old beneath it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then she remembers being six beneath the Triceratops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both memories feel equally real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new plaque appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not beneath the dinosaur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NEVER BUILT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marcus reads it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around them, the museum begins to tremble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not like an earthquake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
