notices is that the dinosaur is wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She has been coming to the Wrenfield Museum since she was six.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dinosaur has always stood in the entrance hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thirty feet long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teeth like kitchen knives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One foot raised above a bronze plaque:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ALLOSAURUS FRAGILIS<\/strong><br><strong>MORRISON FORMATION<\/strong><br><strong>LATE JURASSIC<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lena knows this because dinosaurs were once the most important thing in her life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At thirteen, she would prefer nobody mention this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But she still knows an Allosaurus when she sees one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And this is not the Allosaurus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a Triceratops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Huge skull.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three horns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Completely different animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lena stops beneath it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her father nearly walks into her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe dinosaur.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhere&#8217;s the Allosaurus?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her father looks up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat Allosaurus?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe one that was here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He laughs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLena, this has always been the Triceratops.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She looks at the plaque.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>TRICERATOPS HORRIDUS<\/strong><br><strong>HELL CREEK FORMATION<\/strong><br><strong>LATE CRETACEOUS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same bronze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same scratches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same little dent in the bottom corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her father continues toward the ticket desk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lena remains beneath the dinosaur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something is wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then she notices the family photograph hanging beside the entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was taken during the museum&#8217;s opening in 1951.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hundreds of people stand beneath the central dinosaur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Triceratops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lena texts Marcus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Museum emergency.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He replies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fire?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Worse.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Robbery?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Dinosaur.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a long pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I hate your emergencies.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcus arrives twenty minutes later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lena takes him directly to the entrance hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat&#8217;s wrong with it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt used to be an Allosaurus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcus looks at the Triceratops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, it didn&#8217;t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou remember.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI remember this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe did our fourth-grade dinosaur project here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat dinosaur did you draw?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTriceratops.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lena stares at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcus stares back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then slowly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat dinosaur do you think I drew?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAllosaurus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou complained for two weeks because Mrs. Denton made you draw the same dinosaur as me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcus starts to answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something has changed in his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI remember complaining.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut I remember drawing that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He points at the Triceratops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two memories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They cannot both be right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They begin checking the museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Egyptian Gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minerals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Civil War room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Lena stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a glass case containing a silver pocket watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plaque says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PROPERTY OF MAYOR EDWARD WREN<\/strong><br><strong>RECOVERED AFTER THE COURTHOUSE FIRE, 1912<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Lena says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcus sighs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat now?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat used to be a revolver.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou&#8217;re sure?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSheriff somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They photograph the watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcus writes the description in permanent marker on his arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SILVER WATCH \u2014 MAYOR WREN \u2014 FIRE 1912<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They leave the gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walk downstairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buy two sodas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Return ten minutes later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The case contains a revolver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plaque reads:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>SERVICE REVOLVER OF SHERIFF THOMAS BELL<\/strong><br><strong>USED DURING THE WRENFIELD BANK SIEGE, 1909<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lena looks at Marcus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcus looks at his arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The writing now says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>REVOLVER \u2014 SHERIFF BELL \u2014 BANK 1909<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He nearly drops his soda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They try photographs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The photographs change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notes change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The museum website changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Old newspapers change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcus emails himself descriptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The emails change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He calls his mother from inside the gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMom, what is in the second case in the Wrenfield History room?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA revolver, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exhibit changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcus calls again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA pocket watch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His mother remembers whichever version currently exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lena remembers both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcus remembers pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither understands why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then an elderly security guard approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Pell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has worked at the museum longer than Lena has been alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou two have visited the same gallery six times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcus immediately says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEducational enthusiasm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Pell looks at the writing on his arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then at Lena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou remember them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lena says nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Pell sighs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat isn&#8217;t good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He takes them downstairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not to the public basement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is an elevator behind a maintenance door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No buttons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Pell uses a brass key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The elevator descends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And descends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcus watches the floor indicator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">B2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">B3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">B4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour museum has four basements?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Pell says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMore.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The elevator stops at B7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The doors open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paintings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furniture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Statues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hundreds of museum plaques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thousands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lena picks one up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>THE FIRST class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody knows how.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody knows when it began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An object upstairs changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">History changes with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Records rearrange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Memories follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Usually nobody notices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUsually?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Pell looks at Lena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery few years, somebody doesn&#8217;t change with it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe don&#8217;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lena is beginning to hate that sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat do you do with them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcus asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Pell gives him a tired look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe don&#8217;t murder children, if that&#8217;s where your mind went.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt wasn&#8217;t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt absolutely was.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They continue between the shelves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Pell explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When an exhibit changes, the old object sometimes appears down here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not always.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes there are several versions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes none.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The museum staff used to investigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually they stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause knowing the old version doesn&#8217;t tell you which one was true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lena stops walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Pell picks up two photographs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In one, there is a church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the other, a grocery store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhich one came first?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe church?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause you showed me that one first.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr. Pell smiles sadly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator
