Eli Mercer knows this because he returned it himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Kingdom Beneath the Orchard.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Green cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gold lettering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A knight standing underneath an apple tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He liked it enough to ask Ms. Voss whether there was a sequel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are three,\u201d the librarian told him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She wrote the titles on a scrap of paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eli put it in his pocket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two days later he returns for the second book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms. Voss looks confused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Kingdom Beneath what?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOrchard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She searches the computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eli checks the shelf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou gave it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don&#8217;t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI returned it Wednesday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms. Voss searches his account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eli reaches into his backpack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scrap of paper is still there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Except now it contains only three blank lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Holloway Library is older than the town surrounding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p the library says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1879.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody seems particularly bothered by this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eli asks his father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProbably reused the stone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His teacher says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaybe they planned the town first.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms. Voss says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDates on old buildings are complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three different explanations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody checks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eli does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The local newspaper archive contains a photograph from the class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe drainage one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFull title?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don&#8217;t remember.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They meet at the library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shelf contains a gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The catalog contains no record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">June checks her phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A blue cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sentence about snow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Never enough to reconstruct the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just enough to know something is missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then one afternoon he notices an empty space between two shelves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not a missing book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A missing shelf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The numbering goes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shelf 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shelf 32.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shelf 34.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJune.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p building plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No Shelf 33.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They search old photographs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Eli finds a library map printed in 1952.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between 32 and 34 is a rectangle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone has scratched through it so violently that the paper has torn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Underneath the damage, one number remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>33.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They wait until closing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is June&#8217;s idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eli would like that entered into the record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 8:00, Ms. Voss locks the front doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 8:15, the lights go out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The children remain hidden behind the local-history shelves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 8:43, they hear wheels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A cart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone is moving through the library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They peek around the shelf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms. Voss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She is pushing an empty book cart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She stops beside History.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Removes one book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looks at its cover for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then whispers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She pushes the book into the empty space between Shelves 32 and 34.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not falls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shelf behind it ripples like water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eli gasps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms. Voss turns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For one second, nobody moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then she says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou shouldn&#8217;t remember this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms. Voss does not call their parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That frightens Eli considerably more than if she had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead she takes them into her office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow many books do you remember?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eli begins listing fragments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The orchard kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drainage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A blue book about winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something involving a ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms. Voss becomes paler with each one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">June asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhere do they go?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms. Voss looks toward the library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe don&#8217;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen why are you putting them there?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause sometimes books become dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">June laughs once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody joins her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms. Voss opens a locked cabinet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside are handwritten ledgers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thousands of titles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms. Voss hesitates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBooks that begin changing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She shows them class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only the ledgers remain because every librarian copies them by hand using ink stored in a locked room beneath the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy does handwriting work?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe don&#8217;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eli hates how often that answer appears in serious investigations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he asks the important question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf everybody forgets the books, how do you know Shelf 33 is doing something good?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms. Voss says nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">June looks at Eli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The assumption underneath the entire library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Books change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Books are placed on Shelf 33.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People forget them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore dangerous books have been safely removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But nobody remembers enough afterward to verify the class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe terrible ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe reasons nobody can remember anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then June points toward the bottom shelf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a book lying horizontally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike the others, it has no title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eli pulls away from Ms. Voss and kneels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A name slowly appears across the cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ELI MERCER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>THE BOY WHO
