Twelve-year-old Eli Mercer knows this because he returned it himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kingdom Beneath the Orchard.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Green cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gold lettering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A knight standing underneath an apple tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He liked it enough to ask Ms. Voss whether there was a sequel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are three,\u201d the librarian told him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She wrote the titles on a scrap of paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eli put it in his pocket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two days later he returns for the second book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Voss looks confused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Kingdom Beneath what?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOrchard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She searches the computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eli checks the shelf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou gave it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI returned it Wednesday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Voss searches his account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eli reaches into his backpack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scrap of paper is still there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Except now it contains only three blank lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Holloway Library is older than the town surrounding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is technically impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Holloway was founded in 1884.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cornerstone on the library says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1879.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody seems particularly bothered by this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eli asks his father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cProbably reused the stone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His teacher says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMaybe they planned the town first.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Voss says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDates on old buildings are complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three different explanations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody checks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eli does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The local newspaper archive contains a photograph from the town’s founding ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cAnd it’s deleting books.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    June lowers the photograph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cYou should have started with that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    They conduct an experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    June selects a book nobody would accidentally remember.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Practical Drainage Systems of Northern Counties, Volume II.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    They photograph the cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Write down the call number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Copy the first sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then Eli checks it out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    They return it the following morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Nothing happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Still there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Still there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Monday morning, Eli calls June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWhat book did we test?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cThe drainage one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cFull title?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cI don’t remember.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    They meet at the library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The shelf contains a gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The catalog contains no record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    June checks her phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The photograph shows her holding nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Their notebook reads:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    TEST BOOK:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Everything after the colon is blank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Except Eli remembers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Not perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    But enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cDrainage,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cNorthern something.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cVolume Two.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    June stares at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWhy do you remember?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eli doesn’t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    They start hiding records outside the library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Notes in lockers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Photographs stored online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Copies mailed to June’s cousin in another state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Nothing works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    When a book disappears, evidence of it disappears too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Usually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eli keeps remembering fragments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A blue cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A sentence about snow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Never enough to reconstruct the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Just enough to know something is missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then one afternoon he notices an empty space between two shelves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Not a missing book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A missing shelf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The numbering goes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Shelf 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Shelf 32.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Shelf 34.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cJune.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    She looks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWhat happened to Shelf 33?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cThere isn’t a Shelf 33.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    She opens her mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cI don’t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    They search the building plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    No Shelf 33.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    They search old photographs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then Eli finds a library map printed in 1952.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Between 32 and 34 is a rectangle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Someone has scratched through it so violently that the paper has torn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Underneath the damage, one number remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    33.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    They wait until closing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This is June’s idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eli would like that entered into the record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    At 8:00, Ms. Voss locks the front doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    At 8:15, the lights go out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The children remain hidden behind the local-history shelves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    At 8:43, they hear wheels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A cart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Someone is moving through the library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    They peek around the shelf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Ms. Voss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    She is pushing an empty book cart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    She stops beside History.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Removes one book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Looks at its cover for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then whispers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cI’m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    She pushes the book into the empty space between Shelves 32 and 34.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Not falls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The shelf behind it ripples like water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eli gasps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Ms. Voss turns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    For one second, nobody moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then she says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cYou shouldn’t remember this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    Ms. Voss does not call their parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    That frightens Eli considerably more than if she had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Instead she takes them into her office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cHow many books do you remember?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eli begins listing fragments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The orchard kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Drainage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A blue book about winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Something involving a ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Ms. Voss becomes paler with each one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    June asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWhere do they go?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Ms. Voss looks toward the library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWe don’t know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cThen why are you putting them there?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cBecause sometimes books become dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    June laughs once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Nobody joins her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Ms. Voss opens a locked cabinet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Inside are handwritten ledgers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Thousands of titles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Some crossed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Some circled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Some accompanied by names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cThe library has always removed certain books.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cBanned books?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Ms. Voss hesitates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cBooks that begin changing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    She shows them one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A children’s story published in 1946.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Thomas and the Red Kite.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The ledger contains several summaries written years apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1946:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Thomas loses his kite and finds it in a tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1963:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Thomas follows his kite into the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1981:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Thomas follows his kite into the forest and meets a woman named Eleanor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    June points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cStories get revised.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cNot after printing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Ms. Voss turns the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1997:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Thomas follows his kite into the forest. Eleanor warns him about the fire at Holloway Mill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The mill fire occurred in 2003.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eli reads the date twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cThe book predicted it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWe thought so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWhat do you think now?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Ms. Voss closes the ledger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWe think it remembered it early.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    The changing books are placed on Shelf 33.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then the library forgets them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The town forgets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Records alter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Photographs change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eventually even the librarian who removed the book forgets why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Only the ledgers remain because every librarian copies them by hand using ink stored in a locked room beneath the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWhy does handwriting work?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWe don’t know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eli hates how often that answer appears in serious investigations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then he asks the important question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cIf everybody forgets the books, how do you know Shelf 33 is doing something good?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Ms. Voss says nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    June looks at Eli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The assumption underneath the entire library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Books change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Books are placed on Shelf 33.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    People forget them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Therefore dangerous books have been safely removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    But nobody remembers enough afterward to verify the conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWhat if the shelf isn’t protecting us from the books?\u201d Eli asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Ms. Voss looks toward the dark library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWhat else would it be doing?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cEating them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    They return to the ledgers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This time they stop reading the librarians’ conclusions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    They look only at observations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Dates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Titles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Disappearances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A pattern appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The books do not become strange randomly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Each begins changing after someone checks it out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Usually the same person repeatedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eli follows the names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    One appears dozens of times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Margaret Holloway.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Founder of the library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Another:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Samuel Voss.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Ms. Voss goes still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cMy grandfather.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Another:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eleanor Mercer.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eli’s stomach drops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cMy grandmother.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    He barely remembers her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    She died when he was four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The changing books were not predicting events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    They were changing around particular readers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Or particular readers were changing around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Nobody knows which.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then June finds something worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The most recent ledger entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    No title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    No date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Only a name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eli Mercer.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    Behind them comes a sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Wood sliding against wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    They leave the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Shelf 32 stands where it always has.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Shelf 34 beside it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Between them is something new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A narrow wooden bookcase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Shelf 33.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It is filled with books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Hundreds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Maybe thousands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Books nobody remembers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Green.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Blue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Leather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Cloth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Some ancient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Some new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eli recognizes one immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Kingdom Beneath the Orchard.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    He reaches for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Ms. Voss grabs his wrist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cDon’t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWe don’t know what happens if you take something back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eli looks at her hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then at the shelf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There are books here that people deliberately removed for more than a century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Maybe for good reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Maybe terrible ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Maybe reasons nobody can remember anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then June points toward the bottom shelf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There is a book lying horizontally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Unlike the others, it has no title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eli pulls away from Ms. Voss and kneels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A name slowly appears across the cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    ELI MERCER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Below it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    THE BOY WHO REMEMBERED<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The book opens by itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The first page contains one sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eli Mercer stood before Shelf 33 and tried to decide whether forgotten things were forgotten because they were dangerous\u2014or dangerous because they had been forgotten.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eli reads it twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then the second sentence begins writing itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It describes him reading the first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    June whispers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cClose it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Eli reaches for the cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The book writes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    June told him to close it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Nobody moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    From somewhere deep inside Shelf 33 comes the sound of hundreds of pages turning at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And for the first time, Eli wonders whether the library has been forgetting books at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Perhaps the books have been remembering them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
