has 212 rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nora counts them twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are twelve floors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rooms 101 through 118 on the first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">201 through 218 on the second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pattern continues all the way up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Except the seventh floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"701\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no Room 707.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nora would probably never have noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Except somebody keeps ordering room service from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nora&#8217;s aunt manages the Bellweather Hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During summer break, Nora works there three afternoons a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mostly she delivers towels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Replaces little bottles of shampoo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carries luggage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does whatever her aunt calls:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCharacter-building employment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nora calls it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeing fourteen and underpaid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuesday afternoon, the kitchen manager hands her a tray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSeven-oh-seven.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nora looks at the ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strawberry jam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One hard-boiled egg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhere&#8217;s 707?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSeventh floor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere isn&#8217;t a 707.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The manager does not look up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen I suppose you&#8217;ve got yourself a mystery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Very funny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nora takes the elevator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">706 is beside 708.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is perhaps eight feet of wall between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nora checks the tray ticket again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ROOM 707<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3:15 PM<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She returns downstairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere isn&#8217;t a room.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The kitchen manager finally looks up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDid you check?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He shrugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBring it back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat do I do with the food?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEat it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This seems like an excellent conclusion to the mystery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At exactly 3:15, another ticket prints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strawberry jam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One hard-boiled egg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Room 707.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time Nora brings her cousin Felix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Felix is twelve and believes every old building contains secret passages until conclusively proven otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They inspect the wall between 706 and 708.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Felix notices the carpet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every hotel room has a small brass threshold beneath the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is one beneath the wallpaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They peel back a loose corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A door has been covered over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere you go,\u201d Felix says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c707.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy would someone wallpaper over a hotel room?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSecret murder.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou always go directly to murder.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSecret tax fraud?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBetter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They put the wallpaper back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then they hear something from the other side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A spoon touching a teacup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nora and Felix stop moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tray is still in Nora&#8217;s hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They ask Aunt Claire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere used to be a room there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nora waits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd there isn&#8217;t anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat explanation has a fairly large hole in the middle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her aunt sighs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c707 was converted into storage during renovations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhere&#8217;s the storage room?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt&#8217;s not accessible from that hallway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCan we see it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause you&#8217;re supposed to be working.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is, however, confirmation that an answer exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bellweather Hotel opened in 1923.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nora and Felix find the original floor plans in the basement records room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Room 707 is there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ordinary guest room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then they find renovation plans from 1968.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">707 is marked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CLOSED \u2014 SERVICE ACCESS ONLY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plans from 1981:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No 707.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plans from 1994:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A blank space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plans from 2007:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wall between 706 and 708 is drawn as solid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Felix measures the class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the newest plans, several feet of the hotel simply disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nora smiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSecret tax fraud?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Felix shakes his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSecret architecture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next Tuesday they wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PLEASE KNOCK.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nora nearly drops the ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Felix looks delighted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFinally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They take the tray upstairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knock on the wallpapered door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Click.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A thin line appears in the wallpaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hidden door swings inward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Room 707 exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is perfectly clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bed made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Curtains open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lamp burning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A suitcase rests beside the dresser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A newspaper lies folded on the desk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody is there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nora checks the newspaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">August 14, 1968.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Felix checks the suitcase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDon&#8217;t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wasn&#8217;t going to open it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou were touching the latch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI investigate with my hands.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the bedside table is a room-service tray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strawberry jam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One hard-boiled egg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Untouched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tea is still hot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p investigating with his hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is staring at the desk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNora.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a hotel register beside the newspaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final guest entry reads:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Very quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou shouldn&#8217;t have delivered the tray.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nora looks at the untouched food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWho is this?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cArthur Bellweather.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Felix can hear the voice through the receiver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His face changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nora grips the phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou&#8217;ve been ordering room service for fifty-eight years?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen who has?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Longer this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arthur whispers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI thought it was you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No seam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No brass threshold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aunt Claire sits down in the hallway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time, she tells them what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arthur Bellweather disappeared from Room 707 in 1968.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room was sealed afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Years later, staff began reporting strange things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calls from the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lights beneath the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Room-service orders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guests asking why someone was walking around inside a room that did not appear on their floor map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the hotel removed the number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the room from the plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually almost everyone who remembered it was gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hotel solved the problem by pretending the room did not exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nora looks at the blank wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
