Everyone in Port Mercy knows the lighthouse still works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is what makes the problem strange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every night at exactly 8:17, its light goes out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not flickers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not dims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exactly eleven minutes later, it returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Coast Guard inspected the machinery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The electrician replaced half the wiring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The town council installed a backup generator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8:17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8:28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After three weeks, people mostly stop talking about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Except thirteen-year-old Owen Vale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because from his bedroom window, Owen can see the lighthouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when its light goes out\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

another light appears farther out at sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Owen first notices it while doing homework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lighthouse beam sweeps across his window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He checks the clock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8:17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Far beyond the harbor, something flashes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 8:28, the lighthouse returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next night Owen waits beside the window with binoculars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8:17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The distant light appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exactly the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following night:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now Owen gets a notebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His best friend Lina thinks he has discovered a ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShips have lights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cExcellent maritime knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut why does it only appear when the lighthouse goes dark?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lina considers this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSecret ship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat was your second idea?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was actually my first idea. I upgraded from ship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They begin recording the flashes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every night produces a different sequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1-2-1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2-1-3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3-3-1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1-4-2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Owen assumes it is a code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a week they try everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Letters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coordinates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Lina notices something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese aren’t messages.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She flips through the notebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey’re directions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Port Mercy has a maritime museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is mostly visited by tourists and school groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Owen’s grandfather volunteers there on Saturdays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The children search old navigation books until they find a signaling system once used by ships approaching the harbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flashes indicate bearings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each sequence points toward a location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They put the locations on a nautical chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every point forms a path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A path leading toward the lighthouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But not the current lighthouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Port Mercy had another lighthouse before this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It stood on Gull Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A storm destroyed it in 1936.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or that is what the town history says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhere’s Gull Island?\u201d Lina asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Owen points at the chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is only water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRight there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere isn’t an island there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI noticed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

They ask Owen’s grandfather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His answer comes too quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGull Island washed away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAn entire island?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was mostly rock.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy did they build a lighthouse on something that could wash away?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grandpa Vale closes the book he has been cataloging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople built plenty of foolish things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lina looks at Owen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Owen looks at Lina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adults who genuinely don’t know something usually say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adults who know something and don’t want children asking about it often give lectures about foolish people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They keep investigating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Old newspapers disagree about the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One says the lighthouse collapsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another says it was abandoned afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A third reports that rescuers reached Gull Island the following morning and found the lighthouse empty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Empty is not collapsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then Owen finds a photograph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gull Island Lighthouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Seven lighthouse keepers and harbor workers stand outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    One of them is Owen’s great-grandfather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    On the back, someone has written:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Last crew before the Mercy Light.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Last crew before the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Mercy Light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    That is the name of the current lighthouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Construction on it supposedly began in 1937.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Owen checks the records again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The photograph is dated 1934.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Something is wrong with the town’s timeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    They borrow a kayak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This is an extremely bad idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Both children agree on that while continuing to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    They leave Saturday morning before sunrise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The coordinates from the flashing light lead them several miles beyond the harbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Just water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Lina checks the chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cThis is it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cThere has to be something.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cThere is. Ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then the tide begins going out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A black shape appears beneath the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Not an island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    They paddle closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    More stones emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Iron rings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Foundations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Gull Island did not wash away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It sank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Or part of it did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And somebody built something underneath it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    They find the entrance during low tide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Stone steps descend between two enormous rocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    At the bottom is an iron door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Above it is the symbol of Port Mercy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Except one part is different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The town seal shows a lighthouse surrounded by seven stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This version has eight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The door is unlocked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Inside is a narrow chamber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Dry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Impossible, considering it should be below sea level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Shelves line the walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Logbooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Signal equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Old lanterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And one enormous brass mechanism connected to cables disappearing beneath the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Owen opens the newest logbook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The handwriting is fresh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The last entry is from yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    8:17 \u2014 Mercy extinguished.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Signal received.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Channel remains open.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Lina reads over his shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cSomeone has been here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A sound comes from above them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Metal scraping against stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The tide is still going out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The door should not be closing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It closes anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then somewhere deeper inside the structure\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    a light flashes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Owen knows that sequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It was the first signal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    He takes out the notebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The first coordinate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Not the lighthouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Not Gull Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    He had plotted it wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Because he assumed every direction began from the harbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The signal begins here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Lina whispers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWhere does it point?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Owen turns the chart around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Far beyond Port Mercy is another mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A tiny circle printed in faded ink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    No name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    No island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Nothing around it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Just a handwritten note beside the coordinates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    DO NOT ANSWER FROM SHORE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Behind them, the brass machinery begins to move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And somewhere out beyond the horizon\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    something flashes back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
