Primary Defense:<\/strong> Let the sentence finish<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe need to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His stomach drops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He knew this was coming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She sits across from him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’ve been thinking about us and\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI knew it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKnew what?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat you were going to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo what?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLeave.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She stares at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was going to ask if we could spend more time together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sentence had not finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The argument had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Unfinished Sentence is already sitting between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field Identification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Human minds predict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A sentence begins:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWould you please pass the\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your hand may already be moving toward the salt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You recognize patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anticipate outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Complete familiar sequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the time, this makes communication faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But prediction has a weakness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the mind completes a pattern incorrectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then instead of waiting for reality to provide the ending, a person begins responding to the ending they supplied themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other person is still speaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the conversation has already moved on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fear Writes Quickly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Unfinished Sentence becomes particularly active when fear knows how the story usually ends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI noticed something about your work\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The employee hears:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You’re in trouble.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’ve been thinking about our relationship\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The partner hears:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I want to leave.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan I ask you something?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The child hears:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I did something wrong.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYour test results came back\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mind is already three rooms ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sentence may eventually confirm the fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes prediction is accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But accuracy after the fact does not mean the missing information was known before it arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Familiar Ending<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Past experience makes certain endings easier to predict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person who has repeatedly been criticized becomes excellent at detecting the beginning of criticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone who has experienced abandonment recognizes sentences that once preceded abandonment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone raised around anger notices tiny changes in speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These abilities may be remarkably accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may also occasionally place an old ending onto a new sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The beginning resembles something familiar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the mind reaches into the archive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finds the old conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attaches it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the present person must somehow argue with words they never said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Text Messages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The entity thrives in written communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can we talk later?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later about what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No immediate continuation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The blank space becomes fertile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By lunchtime:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something is wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By three:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are angry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By five:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The relationship is ending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At seven:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHey, I wanted to ask what you think we should get Mom for her birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mind has lived through an entire catastrophe inside punctuation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Interrupted Sentence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes nobody intended to leave the sentence unfinished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The phone dies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone walks into the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A meeting begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A child needs attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you, but\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then life interrupts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The listener carries the fragment for six hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Unfinished Sentence does not require much material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Give it half a sentence and enough uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will happily write the rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Defensive Strike<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Prediction becomes especially dangerous when someone acts against the anticipated ending before it arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know what you’re going to say.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then they attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Withdraw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Refuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Punish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the feared event never existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now a conflict has been created in defense against something that had not happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This can produce a painful loop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One person expects rejection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They become hostile first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other person reacts to the hostility by withdrawing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The withdrawal becomes evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

See? I knew they were going to reject me.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prediction helped manufacture its own ending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes You Do Know<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Patterns matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If someone has delivered the same speech twenty times, you may reasonably know where sentence twenty-one is headed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are not required to pretend every interaction occurs without history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But even then, leave a little room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People occasionally surprise you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Circumstances change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Words change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if the ending is exactly what you expected, waiting another ten seconds has usually cost very little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pause<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the simplest defenses against this entity is uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’ve been thinking\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let them think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe need to talk\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let them talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone pauses halfway through something frightening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let the silence exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your mind may produce several endings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notice them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not confuse production with reception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are hearing yourself until the other person begins speaking again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask Instead of Complete<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If the uncertainty becomes too difficult, ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen you say we need to talk, is something wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’m noticing I’m getting worried. What did you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan you finish that thought?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is different from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know exactly what you’re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A question leaves room for information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A conclusion fills the room before information can enter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encounter Protocol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When you notice yourself responding to something another person has not actually said, stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Separate the sentence into two pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What did they say?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What did I add?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both pieces may matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your prediction may reveal fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pattern recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A legitimate warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not discard it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simply label it correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They said this.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I expect that.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now wait for the rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the feared ending arrives, deal with the real thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If it does not, you have avoided fighting a ghost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field Note<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Human beings are excellent storytellers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Give the mind a beginning and it will search eagerly for an ending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it finds the correct one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it reaches into an old story and attaches a conclusion that belongs somewhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So when another person’s words stop halfway and your mind rushes ahead\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

notice what it writes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then leave a little blank space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sentence belongs to the person who is still speaking.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
