Danger Level:<\/strong> Moderate
Primary Effect:<\/strong> Gives one person’s anticipated judgment disproportionate authority over choices made in their absence
Primary Defense:<\/strong> Look at the empty chair<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The theater is full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three hundred people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The musician walks onto the stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Applause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She sits at the piano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looks over the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Row twelve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seat fourteen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Empty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her father is not coming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She knew he wasn’t coming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They have not spoken in four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, when she places her hands on the keys, she thinks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He would hate this song.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She almost changes it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three hundred people are waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One person is absent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And somehow the absent person has the best seat in the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Audience of One has arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field Identification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Human beings learn themselves partly through other people’s eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mentors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Critics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bullies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People whose approval mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People whose disapproval frightened us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time, some of these observers move inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You no longer need the person physically present to imagine their reaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You choose a shirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She’d think this looks ridiculous.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consider changing careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dad would say I’m throwing everything away.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Write something unusual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My old professor would hate this.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rest for an afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He’d call me lazy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody said anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody needed to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The audience is already seated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Empty Chair<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Audience of One becomes especially strange after the relationship changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The teacher retired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The parent died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The marriage ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The friend moved away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boss no longer employs you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The critic probably has not thought about you in years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, choices pass before the empty chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Would they approve?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Would they laugh?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Would they understand?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Would they finally be impressed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Physical authority has disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Internal authority remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The person may no longer possess any actual power over your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But their imagined reaction continues receiving a vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the deciding vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Approval<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not every internal audience is hostile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the Audience of One is someone whose approval you desperately want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person builds a successful career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Receives awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People respect their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, each achievement quietly asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is this enough yet?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enough for whom?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There may be an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A former partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A teacher who dismissed them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone who said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’ll never make anything of yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Years later, an entire life can become an argument addressed to someone who is no longer participating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Success becomes correspondence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every accomplishment another letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

None receive a reply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defiance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Audience of One can control through opposition too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’ll show them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Powerful fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes useful fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defiance can carry a person through extraordinary difficulty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if every major choice remains organized around proving someone wrong, the person being defied still occupies an important position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou can’t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You spend twenty years proving you can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who chose the destination?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes rebellion is merely obedience facing backward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Imagined Critic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Creative work attracts this entity easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You begin making something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Painting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the work has had time to become itself, the imagined critic arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They sit down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fold their arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You begin editing for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Too strange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Too sincere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Too childish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Too ambitious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Too simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work gradually becomes acceptable to someone who has never seen it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps never will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes criticism improves work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But criticism from an imaginary audience can become difficult to evaluate because the critic cannot answer questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They cannot clarify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They cannot be persuaded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They cannot surprise you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are made partly from your own expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are arguing with a puppet that knows all your fears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Real Audiences Matter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Do not swing too far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other people’s opinions matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are building a bridge, the engineer’s opinion matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are performing for an audience, their experience matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your actions affect your family, their needs matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If several trusted people independently warn you about the same behavior, listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sovereignty is not refusing influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who is actually in the room?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How much authority have I chosen to give them?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a difference between considering another person’s perspective and living under permanent imaginary observation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Borrowed Eyes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes you cannot immediately tell whose eyes you are using.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You look at yourself and feel inadequate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to whom?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You think your house is embarrassing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Compared with whose house?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You think your work is unserious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By whose standard?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You think you should already be farther along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who established the schedule?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Follow the judgment backward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Occasionally you find a person sitting at the end of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Occasionally you find an entire culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Occasionally nobody is there at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just an old chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encounter Protocol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When a decision feels strangely charged by judgment, ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who am I imagining watching this?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let the answer appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are they actually here?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If yes, decide how much their opinion appropriately matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If no:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why do they still have a seat?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not have to throw them out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps their voice contains wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps you love them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps their standards helped shape something valuable in you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Listen if you choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But remember the distinction between counsel and command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The audience does not hold the instrument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field Note<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There may always be people whose voices travel with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some beloved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some feared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some long gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not have to erase them in order to become sovereign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simply notice when an empty chair has begun directing the performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There may be three hundred living people in the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There may be nobody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Either way, before changing the song for the person who isn’t there\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

look at the empty chair.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
