The compass worked perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the traveler was young, north meant safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was a village north of the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If he became lost, he knew what to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field Identification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many behaviors that cause difficulty today began as intelligent responses to yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stay quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watch everyone’s mood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not ask for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep people happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never appear weak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explain yourself immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hide mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Work harder than everyone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leave before someone can leave you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These strategies may look irrational when examined in the present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A child living around unpredictable anger learns to monitor tiny changes in tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An employee under a punitive manager learns to hide mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understandable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person repeatedly abandoned learns not to rely on promises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reasonable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nervous system remembers what worked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the environment changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The strategy remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Successful Strategy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Broken Compass is difficult to discard precisely because it has evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’ve survived this way for years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The strategy may have helped enormously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps it prevented punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avoided humiliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reduced conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kept someone employed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kept someone fed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kept someone alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not mock old survival strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They earned their place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But a strategy can deserve gratitude without deserving permanent command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhere is it pointing me now?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hypervigilance in a Quiet Room<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A person enters a safe environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody is angry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, they monitor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A door closes loudly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their body prepares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone’s voice changes slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attention sharpens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A text receives no immediate reply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something must be wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The system is doing what it learned to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is detecting weather from another climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This can be confusing because the signal feels real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it is real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The body reacted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fear occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thought appeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What may be outdated is the map used to interpret them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Old Rules, New People<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Broken Compass often causes one person to respond to someone standing in front of them as though they were someone from long ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A former partner punished disagreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new partner says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat do you think?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhatever you want.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A parent mocked mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new teacher offers correction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The body hears ridicule before the words have finished arriving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A former employer exploited availability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new supervisor asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCould you help Saturday?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The request feels like a command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The present person may have done nothing wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But they have stepped into a role already marked on the old map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gratitude Before Replacement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

People sometimes try to destroy these strategies through shame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy are you like this?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cStop overreacting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou don’t need to do that anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But simply declaring a strategy unnecessary does not teach the system what should replace it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A compass is difficult to surrender when you believe the alternative is wandering without direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can help to begin differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thank you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You kept watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You learned the moods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You became independent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You stayed useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You kept moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That worked there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are not there anymore.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now a new map can begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recalibration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A compass can be tested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So can a strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I say no, what happens?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I ask for help, what happens?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I admit the mistake early, what happens?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I stop explaining, what happens?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I allow someone to be mildly disappointed, what happens?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not begin with the most dangerous possible experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Small tests produce information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the old warning remains accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep the strategy where it is useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps nothing terrible happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Test again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time the nervous system receives new evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not theory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The map changes because the terrain keeps disagreeing with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Opposite Trap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Do not assume growth means doing the opposite of whatever you once did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If silence once protected you, healing does not require speaking constantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If independence protected you, growth does not require becoming dependent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If vigilance protected you, wisdom does not require becoming careless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal is not reversal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Use silence when silence serves you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speak when speaking serves you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stand alone when appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accept help when appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watch carefully when danger is present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rest your watch when it is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A functioning compass provides information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It does not choose the destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encounter Protocol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When a reaction seems larger, faster, or older than the situation in front of you, ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where did I learn this?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What did this strategy protect me from?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is that condition present now?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not demand an immediate answer from yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look at the terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gather evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Test carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep what still works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modify what partly works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Retire what no longer serves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And remember:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outgrowing a survival strategy does not mean the strategy was foolish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it means it succeeded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It carried you far enough to reach a place where you finally have other choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
