Primary Effect:<\/strong> Makes understanding nearly impossible by giving one person authority over another person’s internal motives
Primary Defense:<\/strong> Separate behavior from motive<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u201cI can’t come tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’m exhausted. I need to stay home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo. You just don’t want to see my family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pauses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI like your family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou always find a reason not to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI went last weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecause I made you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo. I went because I wanted to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou went because you knew I’d be angry if you didn’t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stares at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something peculiar has happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every explanation he gives is immediately replaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He cannot correct the record because the record is apparently being kept somewhere he cannot access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Stolen Motive has entered the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field Identification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Behavior is observable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Motives are considerably more difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone leaves the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can know they left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps they were angry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps frightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps bored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps they needed the bathroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps they remembered something in the car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps they were trying not to say something cruel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps they simply wanted to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The behavior provides clues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History provides clues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Context provides clues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the motive is obvious enough that pretending otherwise would be silly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there remains an important distinction between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think I know why you did that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know why you did that better than you do.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Stolen Motive lives inside that difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Replacement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The entity rarely leaves a blank space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It replaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI forgot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You didn’t care enough to remember.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI need some time alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You’re punishing me.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t agree.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You just need to be right.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t want to lend you money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You’re selfish.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI changed my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You were lying before.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was trying to help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You wanted to control the situation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any of these interpretations could be correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is precisely what makes the Stolen Motive dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A plausible explanation is very easy to mistake for a known fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pattern Recognition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Humans infer motives constantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If someone repeatedly smiles while taking your wallet, you do not need to suspend judgment forever because they insist they are merely enthusiastic about pockets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behavior matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patterns matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contradictions matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person’s account of their own motives is evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not magical access to truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People misunderstand themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People rationalize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The defense against the Stolen Motive is not blind acceptance of every explanation offered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is epistemic discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do I know?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do I suspect?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What have I inferred?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep those shelves separate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Impossible Defense<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once a motive has been stolen, defending against it becomes unusually difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re only apologizing because you want me to stop being angry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, I’m apologizing because I realized I hurt you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSee? Now you’re trying to manipulate me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What answer is available?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Denial becomes evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explanation becomes evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silence becomes evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anger becomes evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Calm becomes evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The accused person has been placed inside a system where every possible response confirms the original interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that point, the conversation is no longer investigating motive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is protecting a conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Benevolent Theft<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not every stolen motive is hostile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes we assign flattering motives too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe only said that because she’s worried about you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe means well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe loves you. She just doesn’t know how to show it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Positive interpretations can erase another person’s experience just as effectively as negative ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A harmful behavior does not become harmless because somebody nearby supplies a beautiful motive for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intent matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impact matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither automatically cancels the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Motive Beneath the Motive<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Stolen Motive can descend indefinitely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI helped because I care about you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, you helped because you need to feel useful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI genuinely wanted to help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecause being needed makes you feel valuable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But eventually the conversation becomes impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any stated motive can always be explained by another motive underneath it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If someone insists on digging deeply enough, every human action can be reconstructed into whatever theory they prefer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At some point, investigation becomes authorship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask Instead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When motive matters, curiosity is usually more useful than declaration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou were trying to embarrass me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat were you trying to do when you said that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not have to believe the answer automatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Compare it with behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the answer and the pattern repeatedly contradict one another, that matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But now you are gathering information rather than announcing possession of another person’s interior world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Motive Does Not Matter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes you do not need to solve motive at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone repeatedly crosses a boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps they are careless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps confused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps controlling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps genuinely well-intentioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may never know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can still say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t want this behavior to continue.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This can be enormously freeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not always need to prove that someone intended harm in order to protect yourself from something harmful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nor do you need to prove good intent before acknowledging something good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behavior can sometimes be addressed at the level of behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encounter Protocol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When you hear yourself saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou only did that because\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

notice the word only<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Translate the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is your motive.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is my interpretation of your motive.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That small change returns uncertainty to the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Observe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Compare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remain willing to revise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If trust is damaged, you may reasonably give someone’s explanation less weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If patterns are strong, you may reasonably infer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But do not confuse inference with direct observation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And do not require another person to confess to your interpretation before their account is permitted to exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field Note<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You can observe another person’s actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can listen to their explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can study patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can make judgments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes your judgment will be correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But another person’s interior world is not territory you occupy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be careful when you reach across the table and announce that you know what lives there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may understand their motive.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may suspect their motive.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may even have excellent evidence.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But before replacing their explanation with your own\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

remember whose mind you are describing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
