Primary Defense:<\/strong> Send the message<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He gets home at six.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is angry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He can tell immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He puts his keys down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That makes it worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dinner is quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually he asks again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre you upset with me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She looks at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou knew today was important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He searches his memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI knew you had the meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd… I hope it went well?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She stares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI needed you here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He looks at the clock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou never asked me to come home early.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI shouldn’t have to ask.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A message has failed to arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, someone is already being held responsible for its contents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Unsent Message has entered the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field Identification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Human beings communicate constantly without words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Facial expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gesture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shared experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person who knows you well may correctly infer an enormous amount without being explicitly told.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is part of intimacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also unreliable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Unsent Message appears when an expectation exists clearly inside one person and is therefore assumed to exist clearly inside another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know what I need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore you should know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know what the plan is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore you should know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know this matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore you should know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information feels so obvious internally that its absence externally becomes difficult to imagine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Invisible Assignment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At work, a manager thinks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone needs to update that spreadsheet before Friday.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friday arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spreadsheet has not been updated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy didn’t anyone do this?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The employees look at one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDid you ask someone to?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI shouldn’t have to tell you everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the employees reasonably should have recognized the task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But perhaps an assignment existed only inside the manager’s head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Unsent Message frequently creates invisible jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Invisible deadlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Invisible rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Invisible promises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then it grades people on their performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Intimacy Test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The entity becomes particularly powerful in close relationships because being anticipated can feel like being known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You remembered my favorite food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You noticed I was tired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You brought the blanket without being asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You knew I needed company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These moments can be beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the mind sometimes reverses the equation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If anticipation demonstrates care\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

then failure to anticipate must demonstrate lack of care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But another person failing to correctly infer your need does not necessarily mean they failed to care about you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes they simply failed to infer your need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That can still hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not always the same injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI Told You\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Unsent Message occasionally disguises itself as a message that was technically sent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI told you we needed to leave early.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTuesday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou said traffic might be bad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That may not have communicated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are leaving at 4:30 instead of 5:30.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hints are messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are simply lower-bandwidth messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes hints are appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes everyone understands them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But when the information matters, clarity becomes increasingly valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a difference between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt’s getting late.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’d like to leave in ten minutes.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One invites interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other provides information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Imagined Conversation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes people remember conversations that never happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because they are lying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They thought about saying something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rehearsed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagined the response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Planned when they would bring it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then days later the mind stores the preparation suspiciously close to the memory of actually doing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI thought I told you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe you did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe you almost did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Memory is not a perfect recording device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When two people disagree about whether something was communicated, certainty alone may not settle the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responsibility Still Exists<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The defense against the Unsent Message is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody owes anyone anything unless every expectation was explicitly stated.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That would be absurd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roles contain expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parents are expected to care for children without receiving daily instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Employees may reasonably be expected to perform established duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Partners develop agreements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Communities develop norms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People should sometimes notice obvious needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Communication exists inside context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But when disappointment repeatedly forms around expectations another person claims not to have known\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

inspect the transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Was this actually communicated?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Was it communicated clearly enough for its importance?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Was there agreement?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or did one person privately promote a hope into a contract?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encounter Protocol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When you find yourself thinking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They should have known,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe they should have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did I tell them?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If yes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the answer is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI hinted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI thought it was obvious.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe talked about something similar.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey know me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI shouldn’t have to ask.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

then the message may deserve another look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Say the thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want you there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI need help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t want visitors tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPlease call before you come over.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI need this finished by Thursday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis date matters to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clarity may feel less magical than being perfectly anticipated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is considerably more reliable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field Note<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is pleasure in being known well enough that someone understands without being told.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enjoy it when it happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But do not quietly turn that gift into an entrance requirement for love, friendship, competence, or care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other people cannot reliably answer messages that remain inside your head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When something matters enough that another person’s response will matter too\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

send the message.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
