There is a traveler standing outside an inn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The door will not open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pushes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He pushes harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He steps backward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Runs at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shoulder first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The door remains closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A woman walking down the street watches him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHaving trouble?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt’s stuck.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He braces one foot against the wall and pulls on the handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHave you tried the other door?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat other door?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six feet to his left is another door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The traveler looks at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then at the door he has been fighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then back at the woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is the entrance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere’s a handle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wrong Door settles comfortably onto the doorstep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field Identification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Persistence is powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many worthwhile things are difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skills require practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Relationships require effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Businesses take time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bodies need training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Problems sometimes resist the first ten attempts and surrender to the eleventh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So people learn an important lesson:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t give up merely because something is difficult.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wrong Door adds one word:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the answer is no, effort increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the answer is yes and nothing changes, effort increases anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The traveler pushes harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More Is Not Always Different<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A person is misunderstood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They explain themselves again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still misunderstood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So they explain themselves longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then louder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then with more examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then with a twelve-paragraph message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the problem is not insufficient explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone wants affection from a person who does not offer affection easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They become more useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More accommodating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More impressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the problem is not insufficient worthiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A manager cannot get a process to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They add meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then mandatory check-ins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then another layer of approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the problem is not insufficient supervision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wrong Door loves solutions that can be intensified without being reconsidered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sunk Effort<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The longer someone has pushed on the door, the harder it becomes to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This seems backward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might expect repeated failure to make abandoning a strategy easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Often it does not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’ve already spent three years on this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’ve put too much money into it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe’ve worked too hard to stop now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI can’t walk away after everything I’ve sacrificed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Past investment begins demanding future investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The door has become expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore it must eventually open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But effort already spent cannot prove that the strategy was correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it proves only that you have been pushing for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Virtue Trap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Wrong Door sometimes hides inside admirable qualities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Loyalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Courage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are useful tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But a tool can be used in the wrong place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Loyalty to a relationship does not require endless repetition of a pattern that harms everyone involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discipline does not require continuing a training method that repeatedly injures you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patience does not require waiting forever for something that has clearly been refused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Courage does not require attacking every obstacle directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes wisdom looks suspiciously like quitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes quitting one approach is what allows the actual work to begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Locked Door<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Of course, some doors really are locked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And some are worth opening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The presence of resistance does not mean you chose incorrectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIs this difficult?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat evidence do I have that this approach can produce the outcome I’m seeking?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A locked door may have a key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A heavy door may require more force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A complicated door may require skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Wrong Door is different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opening it would not take you where you are trying to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That distinction matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Goal Behind the Strategy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Wrong Door becomes easier to recognize when you separate the goal from the method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I want to be understood.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strategy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explain more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I want closeness.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strategy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make myself indispensable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I want financial stability.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strategy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Work more hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I want this conflict resolved.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strategy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Convince the other person that I am right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The strategy may work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it is not the goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once those become fused, abandoning the strategy feels like abandoning the goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It isn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can still want to enter the inn after you stop fighting this particular door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encounter Protocol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When effort keeps increasing while progress remains strangely absent, stop measuring how hard you are trying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What am I actually trying to accomplish?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is this method producing evidence of movement toward it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What assumption makes this seem like the only available approach?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Search for a key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walk around the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Come back tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Decide you no longer need to enter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or notice the open door six feet away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Changing strategies is not necessarily surrender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it is the first evidence that you are paying attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field Note<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Persistence is valuable because some doors are difficult to open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But persistence does not transform every door into the correct one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When repeated effort produces nothing except greater exhaustion, do not immediately conclude that you need more strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
