class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Money.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Job.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Body.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Clothes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Computer.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Collection.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reputation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Relationship.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And once something has a name, the mind starts doing something fascinating:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It starts pretending the thing is permanent.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But look closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your house is wood, glass, stone, metal, electricity, plumbing, paint, and air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your money is numbers moving between databases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your clothes are fibers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your computer is minerals, silicon, plastic, electricity, and mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your body is food becoming cells, cells becoming tissue, tissue constantly breaking down and rebuilding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your possessions are arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your achievements are memories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your reputation is information inside other people&#8217;s minds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your life is movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And beneath all the labels?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sand.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Sandcastle Problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine a child building a sandcastle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They gather sand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They shape it carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They decorate it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They become proud of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIs that your sand?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The child might laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course it isn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s the beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They didn&#8217;t create the sand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They didn&#8217;t invent the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They didn&#8217;t manufacture the sunlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They simply arranged what was temporarily available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet adults do something very similar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We arrange matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then we say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cMine.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ownership is a practical human technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You need to know which backpack is yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which house you live in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which bank account belongs to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which responsibilities you&#8217;ve accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem isn&#8217;t ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem is forgetting that <strong>\u201cmine\u201d is a label placed on something temporary.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Covet Spell<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coveting is different from appreciating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Appreciation says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cLook at this beautiful thing.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coveting says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI need this thing to become mine.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That tiny grammatical shift can create an enormous amount of suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You see the expensive car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The beautiful house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The perfect clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The successful person&#8217;s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The impressive collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The relationship you wish you had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And suddenly the mind creates a quest:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Acquire the Thing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Thing becomes the treasure chest at the end of the dungeon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But here&#8217;s the trap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you finally acquire it, the Thing immediately begins transforming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new car gets dirty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new clothes get worn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new house needs repairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new computer becomes obsolete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The money gets spent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The achievement becomes yesterday&#8217;s achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The body changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The relationship changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The excitement fades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The treasure becomes inventory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then the mind looks toward the next Thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Everything Becomes Inventory<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the stranger mechanics of existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The moment you acquire something, it moves from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Quest Objective<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">to<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Inventory Item<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And inventory items require maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your possessions don&#8217;t simply give you value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also generate <strong>upkeep.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">House?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Repair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Car?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Computer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clothes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Laundry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collection?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Business?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Body?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Food, sleep, movement, care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This isn&#8217;t an argument against having things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s an argument for understanding their actual cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A wise adventurer doesn&#8217;t ask only:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cCan I afford this?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cDo I want this occupying an inventory slot?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mage Looks at the Sand Differently<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mage eventually discovers a strange form of freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They can enjoy things without needing to make them eternal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A beautiful cup can simply be a beautiful cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good meal can simply be a good meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A comfortable chair can simply be a comfortable chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sunrise can simply be a sunrise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mage doesn&#8217;t have to possess the sunset to appreciate it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They don&#8217;t have to own the mountain to admire it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They don&#8217;t have to capture the moment to experience it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They can let the thing be beautiful <strong>while it is there.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when it changes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They can let it change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Sand Is Not the Enemy<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lesson isn&#8217;t:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThings don&#8217;t matter.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Things absolutely matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sand can become a home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sand can become glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sand can become silicon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sand can become a road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sand can become a sculpture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sand can become a castle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Temporary does not mean meaningless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, impermanence may be part of what gives things their meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A flower does not become worthless because it wilts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A meal does not become worthless because it gets eaten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A song does not become worthless because it ends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A life does not become worthless because it is finite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The ending is part of the thing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Great Inventory Wipe<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine that at the end of the adventure, the game gives you a strange screen:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>INVENTORY RESET<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything you&#8217;ve collected is returned to the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sword.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The armor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trophies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gadgets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What remains?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your memories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The people you helped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The things you taught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The moments you experienced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The character you became while carrying all that inventory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps that is the real character sheet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What did I manage to keep?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who did I become while I had it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Sand Test<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you find yourself coveting something, try the Sand Test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is this actually made of?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strip away the marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strip away the status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strip away the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is physically here?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How long will I have it?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not as a depressing question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an inventory question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What does owning it require from me?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Money?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Space?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attention?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maintenance?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Responsibility?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Would I enjoy this even if I couldn&#8217;t keep it forever?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the answer is yes\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">perhaps it is worth having.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the answer is no\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">perhaps you aren&#8217;t actually coveting the thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps you&#8217;re coveting what you believe the thing will say about you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Status Illusion<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A particularly powerful illusion occurs when we stop wanting the object and start wanting the <strong>meaning attached to the object.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The expensive watch may represent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI made it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The large house may represent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m safe.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The beautiful clothes may represent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m worthy.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The impressive job may represent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m important.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The collection may represent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI have enough.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the object cannot permanently provide the meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually the watch is simply a watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The house is simply a house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The clothes are simply clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The title is simply a title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then the mind discovers the uncomfortable question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf I already mattered before I owned this, why was I trying to make the object prove it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Become the Steward<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The alternative to coveting isn&#8217;t rejection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is <strong>stewardship.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The steward says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThis is passing through my hands.
