\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, what did you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI just thought we’d do something.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe can. What do you want to do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She becomes irritated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat’s not the point.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He waits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf I have to tell you, it doesn’t mean anything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now he is irritated too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI asked what you wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether he cares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether she is being fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether people who love one another should have to ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original thing she wanted has almost disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Unclaimed Want has entered the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field Identification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Wanting something makes a person vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A direct want can receive a direct answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want you to come with me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’d like you to call more often.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want the window seat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’d like some attention.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That can hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So sometimes a want disguises itself before entering the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt’s only fair\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWould you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

it becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnyone who cared would\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The desire has not disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has simply acquired armor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Courtroom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once a want becomes an argument about obligation, the conversation changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’d like you to spend Saturday with me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

is a request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou always choose your friends over this family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

is a prosecution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first statement gives another person something they can respond to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can we do Sunday?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second asks them to defend their character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the person who might have happily spent Saturday together is explaining where they were last Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the Saturday before that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evidence appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Old calendars are consulted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Unclaimed Want has successfully converted a request into a trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mind-Reading Requirement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the want remains completely unspoken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person hopes someone will notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Invite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bring something home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plan something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sit beside them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disappointment grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually the disappointment itself becomes evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If they cared, they would have known.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes people do know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human beings notice one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A thoughtful surprise can mean a great deal precisely because nobody had to ask for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But being known is not the same as being perfectly readable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone can love you deeply and still fail to correctly infer what you wanted on Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Telepathy is an unusually demanding standard for affection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Moral Costume<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Unclaimed Want particularly enjoys dressing preference as morality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want the window open.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt’s stuffy in here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’d rather leave early.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere’s no reason for us to stay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps there isn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t want you talking to that person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou should have more respect for our relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the want has become difficult to negotiate because disagreeing with the preference appears to mean disagreeing with a moral principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other person may still say no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But now they must apparently become unreasonable in order to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wants Are Allowed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is nothing shameful about wanting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are allowed to want company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A particular restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The comfortable chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Less responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A day alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone to remember your birthday without being reminded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some wants will be beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some selfish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some impractical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some contradictory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some will change before lunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A want does not need to become morally correct before you are allowed to acknowledge that it exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can simply say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want this.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That statement does not create an obligation for anyone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It creates information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Other Side<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Naming the want also protects the person hearing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A request allows sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWould you come with me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now I can answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An accusation attempts to determine the answer before I give it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you cared about me, you’d come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now saying no apparently means accepting the identity of someone who does not care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The behavior being requested may be identical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The structure is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Invitation leaves the door visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Unclaimed Want tries to hide the door behind judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the Want Is Reasonable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the hidden want is extremely reasonable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone wants their partner to contribute more around the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone wants a coworker to stop interrupting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone wants their family to call before arriving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naming the want does not weaken the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Often it strengthens it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want you to ask before borrowing my things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI need you to stop making plans that involve my time without checking with me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI would like us to divide this work differently.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now there is something another person can actually respond to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clarity is not surrender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encounter Protocol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When you notice yourself building a large argument about what someone should obviously do, ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do I want?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strip away the evidence for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strip away what a good partner would do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What a responsible employee would do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What normal people do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What everyone knows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There may be an important principle underneath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep it if there is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But look for the request hiding beside it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you say it plainly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I want\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I would like\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Would you be willing\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then allow the other person to actually answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their answer may disappoint you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is part of asking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A request that cannot survive the possibility of no was never entirely a request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field Note<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An unspoken want does not become more legitimate by disguising itself as somebody else’s duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Want what you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Examine it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Name it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask when asking is appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Negotiate when negotiation is possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accept that another sovereign person may answer differently than you hoped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is considerable strength in being able to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
