Primary Effect:<\/strong> Converts help into a system that prevents another person from developing or exercising their own capacity
Primary Defense:<\/strong> Help without taking the wheel<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first time, the car breaks down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She calls her brother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He comes immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He brings tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gets the car running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Follows her home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good brother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two months later, the car will not start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She calls him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He comes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The battery terminals are badly corroded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDidn’t we talk about cleaning these?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI forgot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He cleans them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starts the car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three months later, another call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This time she has run out of gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He brings a can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later there is a flat tire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then an overdue registration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then another dead battery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually his phone rings and his body reacts before he even looks at the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He knows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She needs him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rescue Loop smiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field Identification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Helping is good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People need one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes another person genuinely cannot solve the problem in front of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes they are injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overwhelmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inexperienced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poorly equipped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the loving thing is simply to step in and carry the weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rescue Loop does not appear because someone helped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It appears when help repeatedly removes the opportunity or necessity for capacity to develop.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One person encounters difficulty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another person solves it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Relief arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difficulty returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same person solves it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Relief arrives again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually both people acquire roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One becomes the person who has problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other becomes the person who handles them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The loop is complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Helpful Trap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Rescue Loop is difficult to identify because it often begins with genuine kindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone you care about is struggling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You know how to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why wouldn’t you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So you make the phone call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fill out the form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explain the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lend the money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clean the mess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speak to the teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Handle the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fix the mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember the appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Find the lost object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make the excuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solve the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually you become extraordinarily competent at managing another person’s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, they may become increasingly practiced at bringing it to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither person necessarily intended this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rescuer may even believe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey would fall apart without me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But an uncomfortable question eventually appears:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How much opportunity have they had to discover otherwise?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assistance and Replacement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is an important difference between helping someone perform a task and performing the task in their place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consider a person learning to cook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can stand nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Answer questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Show them how to hold the knife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explain what medium heat means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let them burn something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Help clean up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try again tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or you can become nervous when they struggle, take the knife from their hand, finish dinner yourself, and say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere. It’s easier if I do it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dinner is ready faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The kitchen is cleaner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the learner has learned something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not cooking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They have learned:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I struggle long enough, someone more capable will take over.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rescue Loop appreciates efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cost to the Rescuer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rescuers often become tired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then resentful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then confused about their resentment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After all, they volunteered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody forced them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Except sometimes the relationship has quietly changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The help that was once freely offered is now expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rescuer cannot easily stop because stopping feels cruel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rescued person may experience withdrawal of assistance as abandonment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’ve always helped me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

True.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That history matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But yesterday’s help does not automatically create tomorrow’s obligation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually the rescuer may find themselves maintaining a system they dislike because they are afraid of what will happen if they stop maintaining it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now both people have lost agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One believes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I cannot do this without you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other believes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I cannot stop doing this for you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rescue Loop has two seats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Necessary Rescue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Do not become foolish in the other direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If someone is drowning, do not stand on the dock explaining that rescuing them might interfere with their development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rescue them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emergencies are emergencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children require care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Illness changes capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disability may require ongoing assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People sometimes need to be carried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People sometimes need money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People sometimes need someone else to make the call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human beings are interdependent creatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShould I help?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The better question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat kind of help increases this person’s available agency?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the answer is doing everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it is doing half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it is teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it is standing nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it is allowing a manageable consequence to arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Difficult Moment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Rescue Loop often becomes visible at the moment when the rescuer knows exactly how to solve the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer is obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tools are right there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking over would be faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is where patience becomes a form of help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat do you think you should do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet’s look.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGive it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference can feel painfully inefficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learning often is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person developing capacity will make mistakes that an experienced person could easily prevent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not every mistake needs to be prevented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some are tuition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encounter Protocol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before rescuing, determine what is actually required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is this danger?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or difficulty?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the person unable?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or inexperienced?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do they need the problem solved?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or do they need company while solving it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask what help they want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Offer information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Offer tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Offer presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Offer part of the labor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When possible, leave some portion of the task in their hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have been rescuing for a long time, do not expect the pattern to disappear immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person who has learned to rely on you may genuinely feel frightened when you begin returning responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Go carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not manufacture abandonment in the name of teaching independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But do not confuse love with permanent substitution either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field Note<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Good help does not always make the difficulty disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes good help makes the person larger than the difficulty.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pull someone from the water when they are drowning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, when the danger has passed and the shore is quiet\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

perhaps teach them to swim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
