Nobody uses the west door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a perfectly ordinary door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brass handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A little window near the top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It opens onto the courtyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every morning people walk down the eastern hallway, through the kitchen, around the storage room, and out the south entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It adds several minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visitors occasionally reach for the west door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot that one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou can’t use that door.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most people accept this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One day, someone doesn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy can’t we?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt’s not an entrance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt has a handle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, I mean\u2014we don’t use it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIs it broken?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlarmed?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDoes it belong to somebody?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThen why can’t we use it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody knows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They ask the oldest employee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He remembers being told not to use the west door when he started thirty-two years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They ask the director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She thought it was a fire regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They ask maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maintenance thought administration wanted it closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Administration thought maintenance had declared it unsafe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually someone finds an old photograph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forty-one years earlier, construction equipment had occupied the courtyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The west door had been closed for six months to keep people away from the worksite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The construction ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The equipment left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The warning sign disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rule remained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Phantom Rule had been guarding an empty courtyard for four decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field Identification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Phantom Rule appears when a restriction survives the circumstances that created it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, there may have been an excellent reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t go there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t touch that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t ask her about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Always submit this form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never call after six.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children aren’t allowed in that room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We don’t invite outsiders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody works from home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You must ask permission first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then circumstances change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technology changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children grow up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emergencies end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Relationships evolve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original danger disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But behavior has memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone teaches the rule to the next person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That person teaches another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually the explanation is lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only the restriction remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Authority Without a Face<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Phantom Rule becomes powerful when nobody believes they possess the authority to question it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWho says?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who are they?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everybody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rule seems to originate everywhere and nowhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This gives it unusual durability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A rule made by a person can be discussed with a person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Phantom Rule has no office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No phone number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No signature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No living author.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You cannot appeal to someone who does not exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So people appeal to one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan we change this?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t think we’re allowed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWho would stop us?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And somehow that is enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inherited Instructions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not all Phantom Rules belong to organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some live inside people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never ask for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t draw attention to yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Always finish everything on your plate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adults don’t play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Men don’t cry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nice people don’t say no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You must answer immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rest has to be earned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If someone is upset with you, you must fix it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps these instructions once helped someone survive a particular environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps they were taught directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps they were inferred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps nobody ever said them aloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But eventually the environment changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The child becomes an adult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dangerous household is gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old authority no longer has jurisdiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, the rule remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A guard standing faithfully beside a gate that disappeared years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do Not Confuse Investigation With Rebellion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Some rules are real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some are important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some exist for reasons that are not immediately visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fact that you do not understand a rule does not prove that the rule is foolish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A traveler who discovers a sign reading:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DO NOT ENTER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

should not automatically declare themselves liberated and walk into the minefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigation comes first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Find the origin if possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Determine whether the condition that produced the rule still exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Break rules.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Know which rules you are actually following.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is a different discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When you encounter a restriction that seems strangely difficult to explain, ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happens if we don’t do this?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Has anyone actually checked?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When was this rule created?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What problem was it meant to solve?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does that problem still exist?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the answers reveal a perfectly sensible rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now you understand it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes they reveal a rule that needs modification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now there is something concrete to discuss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And sometimes everyone looks toward the west door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody speaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone finally reaches for the handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It opens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sunlight comes through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encounter Protocol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Do not fight every Phantom Rule you discover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some are harmless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some traditions are worth keeping even after their practical necessity disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humans are allowed to do things simply because they value doing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The danger begins when preference becomes invisible authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is an enormous difference between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe choose to do it this way.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have no choice.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One is tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other is captivity to an instruction nobody has examined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you discover that a rule is no longer necessary, you still get to decide whether keeping it serves something worthwhile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But make that decision awake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field Note<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Old rules deserve neither automatic obedience nor automatic destruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They deserve examination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some were built around dangers that still exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some preserve wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some protect people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some are merely habits wearing the clothes of authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So when you find yourself standing before a perfectly ordinary door that everyone insists cannot be opened\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ask why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Listen carefully to the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if nobody knows\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n
