The new employee is late on his first day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seven minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His manager notices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot a great start.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The employee apologizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was an accident on the highway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The manager now knows something about him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is unreliable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three weeks later the employee arrives early every morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody notices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One afternoon he returns from lunch four minutes late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The manager notices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There it is.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unreliable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A month passes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He volunteers for an extra shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is generous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He finishes a project two days early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he forgets to answer an email before leaving Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The manager sighs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI knew this was going to be a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The First Draft has survived another revision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field Identification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The First Draft appears when an early interpretation of a person becomes the lens through which later behavior is understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First impressions are useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humans need them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You cannot spend six months conducting a careful longitudinal study of everyone who walks toward you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You estimate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You make provisional judgments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safe?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unsafe?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friendly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Angry?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Competent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interested?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lost?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your mind sketches quickly because sometimes quickly matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem begins when the sketch is mistaken for the finished portrait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The First Draft does not say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is my current impression.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is who they are.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After that, new information has a difficult time getting through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Editor Goes Home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once the First Draft establishes itself, evidence stops being treated equally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Information that supports the draft is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Information that contradicts it becomes an exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The selfish person does something generous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, he wanted something.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The irresponsible person succeeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe got lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difficult child behaves beautifully all afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe must want something.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The competent person makes a mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEveryone slips sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incompetent person makes the same mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Same evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Different story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The draft has begun editing reality instead of allowing reality to edit the draft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reputation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The First Draft becomes considerably stronger when it learns to reproduce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One person tells another:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJust so you know, she’s difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the second person meets her already carrying a draft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A short answer becomes hostility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A disagreement becomes confirmation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A boundary becomes attitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A tired expression becomes contempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new observer may sincerely believe they reached their conclusion independently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They did observe the behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But they were told what kind of behavior to look for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soon an entire group may possess a remarkably detailed understanding of someone that no individual member has actually investigated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The First Draft has become a shared document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Old Versions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Families are particularly vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They have unusually long archives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reckless teenager becomes the reckless adult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shy child becomes the shy sibling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The irresponsible younger brother turns forty and still receives advice based on things he did at nineteen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the family is correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People do have patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Past behavior matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trust should not be rebuilt merely because someone announces that they have changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But history is evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not a prison sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If no amount of new behavior is permitted to modify an old conclusion, the conclusion is no longer being tested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is being protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First Drafts About Yourself<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The entity does not only attach to other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes you write one about yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am bad at math.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t finish things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am awkward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI can’t cook.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am terrible with people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI always mess this up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the draft once contained useful information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe you really were inexperienced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe you failed repeatedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe somebody whose opinion mattered described you that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then time passed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Practiced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Changed environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the old document remained open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now every mistake is sent immediately to the archive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every success is marked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EXCEPTION.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The First Draft is perfectly willing to keep you trapped inside an outdated description of yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encounter Protocol<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Do not destroy first impressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Use them correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Write in pencil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you notice yourself saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe’s just\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe always\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey’re the kind of person who\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI knew she would\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What evidence would cause me to revise this conclusion?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is an important question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the answer is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then you are no longer observing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are defending a draft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What has remained consistent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What has changed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What did you actually witness?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What were you told?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which events became evidence?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which events were dismissed as exceptions?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Revision does not require naivety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone who has repeatedly harmed you does not become trustworthy because they behaved well twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patterns matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So does new information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The task is not to replace skepticism with gullibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The task is to keep the document editable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field Note<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You will meet incomplete versions of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They will meet incomplete versions of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That cannot be avoided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But a first impression should remain what its name implies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leave room in the margins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep the pencil nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reality is allowed to submit revisions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
