became a proposal submitted for review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meet <strong>The Explanation Debt.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Field Identification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Explanation Debt appears when the traveler believes a decision is incomplete until sufficient justification has been provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I can&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don&#8217;t want to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans should explain themselves sometimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Relationships depend upon context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Managers need information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Partners deserve communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friends deserve consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you cancel important plans at the last moment, an explanation may be appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The entity appears when explanation stops being communication and becomes <strong>permission-seeking disguised as reasoning.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Encounter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A man told his family he would not be attending a gathering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p entire weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he noticed something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of the reasons were actually the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I don&#8217;t want to go.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything else had been evidence presented to a court nobody had authority to convene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reasons Invite Problem-Solving<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can&#8217;t come because I don&#8217;t have a ride.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ll pick you up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Problem solved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But perhaps transportation was tired.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can sleep in the car.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soon the conversation becomes absurd because the listener believes they are helping overcome obstacles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are secretly trying to make the obstacles impossible to overcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The False Obstacle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People often provide socially acceptable reasons instead of the real reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Real reason:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don&#8217;t want to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Presented reason:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m busy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other person solves busy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now frustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not necessarily mean you should announce every raw preference with brutal precision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tact matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But recognize the architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you present a boundary as a logistical problem, people may reasonably attempt to solve the logistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Cross-Examination<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p Okay. matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Policy matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But notice unnecessary disclosure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medical details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Family details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personal history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Entire narratives offered to prove the request deserves consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the appropriate amount of information is simply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI need to use a personal day Friday.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Privacy is not dishonesty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Boundary Explanation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t lend my car.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now temptation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Insurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Past experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What if none of those explanations satisfy them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boundary remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI just don&#8217;t lend it out.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m leaving at eight because I have work early.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cCould we leave at nine instead?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Negotiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps you say yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if you did not intend to negotiate, recognize when explanation accidentally opened one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator Yes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one reason yes can feel easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes requires almost no explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cCan you help?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p emotional state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The argument continues until they feel okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That may take forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Explanation Debt and The Moving Finish Line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One reason is not enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
