answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They usually do not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWant to come Friday?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cCan you help with this?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cCan I borrow your car?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may consider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the Default Yes compresses the decision window to nearly zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The traveler loses the small piece of time in which sovereignty operates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Social Reflex<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone asks nicely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The body produces:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sure.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps politeness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps fear of disappointing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps genuine willingness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem is that all four can sound identical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may not know which one answered until later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Delayed No<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hours after agreeing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don&#8217;t want to do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the situation is harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have already created expectation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Changing your answer may inconvenience someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the traveler keeps the commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Resentment grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Default Yes has transformed a simple decision into an obligation-management problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody respects my time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if the other person heard yes, they may reasonably believe you agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Resentment cannot communicate a boundary that language concealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Hopeful Mind Reader<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the traveler expects others to notice the reluctant fiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Favor Yes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cCan you do me a favor?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have agreed before hearing the task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Better:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat do you need?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the request can exist before the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This tiny grammatical change restores an entire decision process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Workplace Yes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cCan you take this on?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overloaded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deadline missed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manager confused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhy didn&#8217;t you tell me you had too much?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because every incoming task received a green light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your workload was communicating capacity you did not actually possess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Competent Person&#8217;s Yes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Capable people often know they <em>can<\/em> help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can blur an important distinction:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can I?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">versus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Should I?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">versus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Do I want to?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ability is not obligation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fact that you could solve the problem does not automatically make solving it the best use of your resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Family Yes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Families can develop fast assumptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;ll drive, right?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;ll bring food?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;ll handle Grandma&#8217;s appointment?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually the traveler becomes infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not necessarily because anyone forced them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because every open role received the same answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Relationship Yes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIs it okay if\u2026?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it isn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You know it isn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps you fear seeming controlling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Needy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So you approve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later the issue returns much larger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A false yes does not preserve peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It postpones information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Intimacy Yes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This deserves clarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone can agree to affection, touch, or sex and later realize they were operating from reflex, pressure, fear, or habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consent should have room for an actual answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And an earlier yes does not eliminate the ability to stop later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t want to continue.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current answer matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bodies are not bound by conversational momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Default Yes and The Courtesy Trap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Courtesy Trap says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Saying no would be rude.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Default Yes solves the problem instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sure.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Social friction disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Future burden appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Default Yes and The Manufactured Obligation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Say yes repeatedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soon nobody asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Default Yes lays the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manufactured Obligation builds the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Default Yes and The Access Creep<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone asks for access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then adjacent access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually the traveler feels crowded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But each individual door was opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem was not necessarily one enormous violation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was the absence of inspection at each gate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2
