continually relocating the point at which effort is permitted to become enough<br><strong>Preferred Habitat:<\/strong> The horizon<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it isn&#8217;t published.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Published.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it hasn&#8217;t sold enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sold well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But not <em>that<\/em> ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone has quietly moved the ribbon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meet <strong>The Moving Finish Line.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Field Identification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Moving Finish Line appears when achievement continually changes the definition of enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If I can just get there.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Well, obviously that wasn&#8217;t really there.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The milestone remains objectively completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But psychologically it is demoted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What once represented success becomes merely the minimum required to pursue the next thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Growth Is Not the Problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are allowed to want more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p the event arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans adapt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The extraordinary becomes normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If every success permanently overwhelmed us, ordinary functioning would become difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But adaptation creates an illusion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Perhaps the achievement wasn&#8217;t significant after all.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You simply live there now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mountain Behind You<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A strange property of progress:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mountain ahead looks enormous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mountain behind becomes terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You forget the climb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What once required courage becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Something I did.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why experienced people sometimes underestimate how far they have traveled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their achievements have become part of the genuinely improves life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But security can become a number that accelerates whenever income approaches it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that point, the traveler is not pursuing a target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are pursuing distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now five more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Run a mile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lift this weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again, progression can be joyful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But watch when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I am becoming stronger<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">turns into:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I am never strong enough to deserve satisfaction.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Training needs progressive overload.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Identity does not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Appearance Finish Line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fix one thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another becomes visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Muscle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Posture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The closer inspection becomes, the more imperfections appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A traveler can spend years approaching an image that updates faster than they can reach original miracle\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Something that did not exist now exists because I made it<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2014can disappear beneath performance metrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Metrics matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But creation existed before the dashboard sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hundred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thousand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Revenue target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traffic target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Growth target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A business may genuinely need continued growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the founder also needs some mechanism for recognizing completed stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Otherwise success becomes a staircase where every step vanishes immediately after being climbed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Knowledge Finish Line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Once I understand this, I&#8217;ll feel competent.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now you can see ten things you don&#8217;t understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of expertise&#8217;s paradoxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knowledge expands the visible frontier of ignorance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The beginner thinks the territory is small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The expert sees the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not confuse increased awareness of what you do not know with decreased competence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes seeing more unanswered questions is evidence that you learned class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When I&#8217;m better, this won&#8217;t bother me anymore.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then something bothers you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not healed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Careful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Growth does not necessarily mean:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Never activated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Never sad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Never angry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Never afraid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Never struggling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the change is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You recover faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recognize the pattern sooner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cause less damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask for help earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Choose differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The finish line class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once we&#8217;re dating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once we live together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once we&#8217;re married.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once we have a house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once we have children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the children are older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once things calm down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Life becomes a hallway of waiting rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each stage is treated as preparation for the real one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually the traveler discovers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those rooms were also life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Moving Finish Line and The Moving Goalpost<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Close relatives, but not identical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Moving Goalpost often comes from <strong>outside<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone changes the requirements after you meet them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Moving Finish Line often operates <strong>inside<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You achieve what you wanted and immediately redefine what would make the achievement meaningful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>That wasn&#8217;t what I asked for.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>That wasn&#8217;t enough for me after all.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They can, of course, cooperate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Moving Finish Line and The Scorekeeper<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p
