Take ownership.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next problem:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She acted independently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhy wasn&#8217;t I consulted?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually she began hesitating over everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her manager noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou need to be more confident.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The employee believed she had a confidence problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But confidence becomes difficult when the map changes according to whichever direction you travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Search for the Correct Answer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Double Bind often causes obsessive analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe I said it wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe I should have waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe I should have spoken sooner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe I was too direct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe I wasn&#8217;t direct enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The traveler assumes there must have been a correct response hidden somewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So they replay the encounter repeatedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes this is useful reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes they are solving an equation with contradictory terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Relationship Bind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI want you to open up more.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You begin talking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cEverything doesn&#8217;t have to become a big emotional conversation.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So you share less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou never tell me what&#8217;s going on with you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue may be negotiable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps what is actually needed is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different timing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different amounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different ways of communicating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But until those specifics are named, the traveler is asked simultaneously to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reveal more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And reveal less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Independence Bind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Common in families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re an adult. Handle your own life.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the adult makes an independent decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou didn&#8217;t even ask us?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The family wants independence\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">provided the independent choice resembles what they would have chosen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is not necessarily independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may be delegated obedience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Leadership Bind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A leader says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI want people who challenge me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone challenges them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room freezes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Promotion disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone learns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stated rule remains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Challenge me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The operational rule becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Know when I do not actually mean that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Double Bind has joined The Unwritten Rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dangerous pair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Caregiver Bind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou need to take care of yourself.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the caregiver takes an evening off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re leaving now? We need you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re going to burn yourself out if you don&#8217;t take breaks.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the system simultaneously requires rest and makes rest practically impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually the caregiver may blame themselves for failing at self-care inside an environment structurally hostile to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Parenting Bind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A child hears:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cTell me the truth and you won&#8217;t be in trouble.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They tell the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are punished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next time they lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou know the lying is worse than what you did.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the parent genuinely intended to reward honesty but reacted emotionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, the child learns something:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Truth is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Truth is dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can produce elaborate navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Success Bind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cBe successful.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not become arrogant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not leave us behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not change too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not make anyone uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not become too different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The traveler is expected to rise without increasing altitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A difficult maneuver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Strength Bind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cBe strong.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So you endure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhy didn&#8217;t you tell anyone you were struggling?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You tell someone next time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou need to toughen up.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now vulnerability and endurance are both punishable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The traveler may eventually stop knowing which internal signal deserves trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Gender Bind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cultures can create contradictory expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be confident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not intimidating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attractive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not vain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p weak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not controlling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Independent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different groups arrange these demands differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The important feature is not any single expectation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is the narrow corridor created when contradictory expectations are simultaneously enforced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Social Bind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cJust be yourself.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wonderful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You behave naturally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cNot like that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apparently the actual instruction was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Be yourself within the range of selves we find comfortable.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mask frequently develops in this terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Double Bind and The Moving Goalpost<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Close relatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Moving Goalpost says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Meet this condition.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then changes it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Double Bind says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Meet these two conditions simultaneously.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even though satisfying one violates the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One makes victory continually farther away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other may make victory structurally impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Double Bind and The Loaded Question<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhy can&#8217;t you be honest without being hurtful?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe there is a useful conversation there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But perhaps the speaker defines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anything they dislike hearing = hurtful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now honesty is permitted only when agreeable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Loaded Question conceals the contradiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Double Bind enforces it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Double Bind and The Unwritten Rule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stated rule:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speak freely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unwritten rule:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not disagree with leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The traveler follows one and violates the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then receives criticism without understanding why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Contradictory rulebooks are excellent Double Bind generators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The No-Win Reputation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually the traveler acquires a reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Too passive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Too aggressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Too dependent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doesn&#8217;t communicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Too emotional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can produce a strange realization:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The criticism changes, but criticism itself remains constant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When opposite behaviors generate the same verdict, examine the system before endlessly adjusting the traveler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Internal Double Bind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No other person is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You tell yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I must rest.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then while resting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I&#8217;m wasting time.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depth does not guarantee clean hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage may have to choose which value carries greater weight and accept the cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First Countermeasure: Stop Searching for the Magic Answer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Is there actually a response that satisfies all the requirements being placed on me?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Write them down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the contradiction becomes obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You cannot:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Work sixty hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sleep eight hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exercise daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Care for three children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maintain the house perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Socialize regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And somehow have abundant free time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem may not be discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arithmetic has entered the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Countermeasure: Name Both Instructions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re asking me to make decisions independently, but you&#8217;re also asking me to consult you before making decisions. It wasn&#8217;t clear to me before this conversation.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are accepting new information without pretending you possessed it yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Countermeasure: Leave the Game Board<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some Double Binds cannot be negotiated because contradiction is serving a purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the system needs you permanently wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then every answer will be interpreted accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that point the relevant question changes from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How do I win?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why am I continuing to play a game with no legal winning move?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the strongest move is refusing the frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When You Create the Double Bind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Watch for this in yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You tell someone:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cMake your own decision.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then become angry when it differs from yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cTell me the truth.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then punish honesty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou can always come to me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then react with irritation when they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not make you malicious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans contain conflicting desires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But other people should not have to become mind readers to manage them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you discover the contradiction, name it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI realize I told you to decide and then got upset when you decided differently.
