As long as the work gets done, manage your own schedule.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wonderful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So she did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some days she arrived at eight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some days ten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She worked from home occasionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deadlines were met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clients were happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three months later, during a review:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThere are concerns about your commitment.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She was class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You may choose your hours freely, provided you choose roughly the same hours we would have assigned you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The written rule and the operational rule were different creatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Second Rulebook<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many environments contain two rulebooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Official Rulebook<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schedules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Written expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Living Rulebook<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who may actually disagree with whom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How late people really stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What clothing is actually acceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which mistakes are forgiven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who gets interrupted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What topics nobody mentions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How quickly messages are expected to be answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The skilled traveler learns to inspect both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cEverybody Knows\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This phrase deserves attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cEverybody knows you don&#8217;t do that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everybody?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New people clearly do not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children do not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outsiders do not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People from other cultures may not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People with different social experiences may not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Often <strong>everybody knows<\/strong> actually means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>People who have spent enough time here have learned this through consequences.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Newcomer Tax<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Newcomers pay heavily for Unwritten Rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They do not know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where people actually sit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who really makes decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How meetings work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether questions are welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How formal communication should be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which rules are strict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which rules are decorative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They make mistakes insiders stopped noticing years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then insiders sometimes interpret unfamiliarity as character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rude.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lazy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Not a good fit.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or perhaps nobody gave them the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Family Rulebook<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Families are dense forests of Unwritten Rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t upset Dad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t mention money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Call Grandma every Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Christmas happens here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We don&#8217;t ask Uncle about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The oldest child helps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The youngest gets forgiven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody says they&#8217;re angry directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apologies happen through food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone may know these rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until someone marries into the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why did she say that at dinner?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because nobody gave her the forty-year-old invisible manual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Emotional Rules<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some rules govern which feelings may exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anger is forbidden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sadness is embarrassing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fear is weakness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excitement is childish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pride is arrogance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One person expresses the prohibited emotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room reacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Article Seven prohibits visible disappointment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhy are you making this such a big deal?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rule remains invisible while enforcement remains active.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gendered Rules<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cultures often teach different invisible expectations according to perceived gender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who should initiate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who should comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who should protect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who may cry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who should pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who should remember birthdays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who should be assertive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who is expected to soften disagreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These rules vary enormously across cultures and groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which is exactly why treating them as universal knowledge creates conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Class Rules<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different social environments teach different assumptions about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hospitality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A traveler enters another environment and violates a rule they did not know existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People may interpret ignorance as disrespect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it is useful to ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Is this person violating our values\u2014or simply our customs?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those are not always the same arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two invisible rulebooks have collided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Friendship Rule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One friend expects:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daily communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another expects:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can disappear for three months and resume immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither model is inherently wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Problems begin when each assumes their version is what friendship naturally means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now different preferences become moral judgments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p Rule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Official:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take your vacation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unofficial:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not during busy season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Official:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speak openly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone answers messages at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organizations sometimes contradict themselves without realizing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
