Severe<br><strong>Primary Effect:<\/strong> One person is assigned responsibility for carrying a system&#8217;s hopes, virtue, success, or reputation<br><strong>Preferred Offering:<\/strong> Achievement<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One child gets into a prestigious school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone celebrates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWe always knew you were special.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They graduate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At every family gathering someone points toward them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThis one never gave us any trouble.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Years later, something goes terribly wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They need help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They sit alone in their car for forty minutes before going inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the family has many roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The responsible one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The beautiful one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The smart one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The athlete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prodigy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The one who will make the family proud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can look like privilege.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Often it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can also become a cage lined with applause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Assignment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody necessarily gathers everyone together and announces:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You will now represent our hopes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roles form gradually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A child gets good grades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Praise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More good grades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More praise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sibling struggles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comparison begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhy can&#8217;t you be more like your sister?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the achievement belongs to more than the achiever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has become evidence about the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Golden Child has been crowned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Encounter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two brothers grew up in the same house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One was chaotic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p don&#8217;t have to worry about you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He liked hearing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At twelve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At sixteen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At twenty-one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, at twenty-eight, his marriage began falling apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He told nobody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stopped sleeping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Work class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Golden Child often discovers an invisible contract:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We admire you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p contract may never be spoken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its enforcement appears when performance stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Family Trophy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A child&#8217;s success can become part of a parent&#8217;s identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>My daughter is a doctor.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>My son plays Division I.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p Child becomes a trophy displayed by the system that produced them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their life is no longer entirely theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has become family evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Representative of the Tribe<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The role exists beyond families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A community selects someone:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You represent symbolic weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A private failure becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What will people think of us?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is a heavy backpack to put on one traveler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Workplace Golden Child<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every manager loves them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Give it to Sarah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sarah will fix it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sarah never complains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sarah stays late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sarah trains everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sarah knows the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sarah receives additional competence required.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Golden Child can become an organizational beast of burden wearing a medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Success Hides Exploitation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one reason the entity can be difficult to recognize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Scapegoat looks mistreated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Golden Child may look favored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Better opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More praise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps more resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All real advantages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But advantage and burden can coexist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A golden cage remains materially nicer than an iron one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is still worth noticing the bars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Impossible Standard<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Success establishes a baseline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A student gets an A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p into pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Failure Becomes Identity Threat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your identity is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I am good at math<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">then a difficult equation frequently travels with perfectionism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If success maintains belonging, reputation, or identity, mistakes become expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prepare more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hide class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Social skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anything requiring awkward early attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may prefer activities where competence appears quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The beginner have requested this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet siblings can reasonably experience them as part of the machinery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roles divide people who might otherwise have been allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Golden Child and Scapegoat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These two entities frequently occupy the same system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One carries:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Everything good about us.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Everything wrong with us.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This creates a remarkably stable mythology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the Golden Child succeeds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the Scapegoat fails:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their failure proves they are the
