onto a single target, allowing the rest of the system to avoid examining itself<br><strong>Preferred Prey:<\/strong> The isolated, unusual, outspoken, vulnerable, or already-disliked<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team is failing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deadlines are missed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-heading\">Field Identification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Scapegoat is a person selected to carry more blame than the evidence supports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not require innocence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Scapegoat may genuinely:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behave badly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Create conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Need consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be unpleasant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The entity appears when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This person causes problems<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">quietly becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once established, new information is filtered through the role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They arrive late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Typical.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone else arrives late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Traffic was terrible.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Scapegoat&#8217;s actions are interpreted as evidence of character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone else&#8217;s actions remain events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Scapegoat Attracts Evidence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once a group believes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Marcus is the problem<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">people begin noticing Marcus-shaped problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His mistakes become memorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His successes become exceptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ambiguous events lean against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If something goes wrong:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Was Marcus involved?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The theory begins collecting confirmation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not necessarily because anyone is lying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attention has been trained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Negative Halo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One disliked trait can spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone is rude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soon they are also:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lazy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dishonest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Incompetent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Selfish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But each claim requires its own evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dislike is not a universal diagnostic instrument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Scapegoat becomes easier to build when one legitimate criticism is allowed to reproduce without supervision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Convenient Target<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scapegoats are often people who are easier to blame than the actual source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The junior employee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The newcomer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The socially awkward person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The person already unpopular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The person without allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The one who speaks differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The one who cannot retaliate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Power influences where blame travels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It often rolls downhill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Outspoken Scapegoat<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the person who names the problem becomes associated with the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThis process isn&#8217;t working.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now they are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Negative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not a team player.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps their delivery genuinely needs work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Did the problem begin when they described it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or did the description merely make it harder to ignore?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smoke alarms are annoying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are not usually responsible for the fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Symptom Carrier<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One member of a system may display symptoms produced partly by the system itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A child acts out in a chaotic household.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An employee becomes angry inside a dysfunctional workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A team member disengages after months of unclear direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The person&#8217;s behavior remains their responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But understanding the ecosystem may explain why the behavior keeps appearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Treating only the visible symptom can leave the generator untouched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Scapegoat Can Become the Role<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the entity&#8217;s cruelest effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person repeatedly treated as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Untrustworthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Irresponsible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually they may begin behaving accordingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why attempt to be understood if judgment is already complete?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why cooperate with a system that expects betrayal?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The assigned identity becomes easier to inhabit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the group points:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>See?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prophecy has acquired evidence partly by shaping the environment that produced it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scapegoating Creates Unity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fractured group can suddenly become cohesive when given a shared enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People who disagree about everything else agree:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>At least we&#8217;re not like them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is socially powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Removing the enemy may therefore threaten the group&#8217;s unity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If belonging depends heavily on shared contempt, the group may continually require new Scapegoats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When one leaves, another is selected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Workplace Rotation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Watch for this pattern:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is always <strong>one terrible employee.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soon another becomes terrible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At some point, examine the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Either the organization possesses supernatural talent for hiring exactly one monster at a time\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">or the role itself may be structural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Family Rotation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same can occur in families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One child leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The selfish one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unstable one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disappointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The family story requires someone to occupy the role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a major identifying mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the target changes but the role survives, the entity is probably larger than the individual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Scapegoat Can Actually Be Dangerous<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not use systems thinking to erase individual responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes one person really is causing enormous harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An abusive person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A corrupt leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A thief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A violent member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A serial liar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Removing them may dramatically improve the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage does not refuse to identify predators because scapegoating exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is evidence and proportion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Test the Theory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What specific problems are we attributing to this person?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">List them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Which of those problems existed before they arrived?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Which continue when they are absent?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Which are directly connected to their actions?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Which involve other people or structures?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the monster acquires anatomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remove the Name<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A useful systems spell:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Describe the problem without using the person&#8217;s name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThe problem is Sarah.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cDeadlines
