class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing sinister happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You were working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans have masks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem begins much later\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">when you get class=\"wp-block-heading\">Field Identification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Mask is a version of yourself constructed for an environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professional you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polite you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parent you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leader you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First-date you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Customer-service you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Family-reunion you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Public you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Private you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None are necessarily false.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A human being is large enough to contain different modes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not behave exactly the same way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a funeral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The calm one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The smart one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The helpful one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The independent one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These identities receive rewards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People praise them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depend on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Expect them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually the wearer may fear that removing the Mask means losing the love attached to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mask Built for Safety<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other Masks are defensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stay agreeable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not show anger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Laugh at the joke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Appear harmless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Appear you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You probably do not provide the complete archaeological record of your emotional state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reasonable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professionalism creates useful boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But sometimes the professional Mask becomes so complete that a person can no longer say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t know.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps refrain from revealing exactly how unreasonable you become when assembling furniture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discovery takes time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But intimacy eventually asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can this person encounter me when I am not presenting?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the answer remains no, the relationship may be class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can handle it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Useful sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Repeated long enough, it can become law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People stop offering help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wearer stops asking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cNobody is ever there for me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But check whether the Mask has been broadcasting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Assistance unnecessary.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strength can accidentally make support difficult to deliver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Funny Mask<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something hurts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes humor reveals truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it evacuates before truth can be touched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Helpful Mask<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You become useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Problem-solving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People value you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I act confident at work.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I am confident.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But also:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Therefore I must always be confident.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The distinction between person and role disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mask is no longer something worn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has become identity law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Audience Reinforcement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Masks strengthen when audiences reward them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is precisely why successful Masks can become difficult to remove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mask and Audience Capture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These entities frequently travel together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mask asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What version of me works here?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Audience Capture answers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>That one. More of that.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually performance becomes optimized around response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The traveler may still be choosing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the available choices become narrower each time applause teaches the system what to repeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator what may safely be revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person may leave a social environment inexplicably exhausted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How much of myself was I managing in there?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes fatigue is the footprint of prolonged masking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Countermeasure: Find the Dressing Room<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every Mask needs somewhere it can come off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A journal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A private practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Somewhere performance is unnecessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If no such place exists, create one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person cannot remain onstage indefinitely without beginning to confuse the stage with the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Countermeasure: Reveal One Degree More<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not need dramatic confession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t know.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;d rather not handle that one.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Small removals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then observe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does the relationship survive?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Often the wearer discovers that the Mask was providing more protection than the current environment required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 conflict?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Establishes competence?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protects privacy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earns status?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not rip away an adaptation before understanding its job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the function is still necessary, perhaps the Mask still belongs in the kit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Countermeasure: Check the Environment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Mask that seems pathological in one context may be entirely rational in another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some environments punish vulnerability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some punish difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some are genuinely unsafe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is not maximum exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is conscious control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I am wearing this because I choose to here.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I no longer know how to remove it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Not Demand Other People&#8217;s Masks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is another danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cJust be yourself.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which self?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And is this environment safe for it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People reveal themselves according to trust, context, history, and consequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are not automatically entitled to what lies behind another person&#8217;s Mask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Safety invites removal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Demand does not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mask Is Not the Enemy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Mage without Masks would be socially helpless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every thought spoken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every emotion displayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every environment treated identically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No modulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No role discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Masks are tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beautiful ones, sometimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The danger is forgetting the difference between equipment and anatomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Field Note<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mask becomes difficult to detect precisely because it is made from pieces of the wearer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may contain genuine humor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Real competence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Actual strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">True kindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Authentic confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Is this really me?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It probably is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The better question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Is this all I am allowed to be here?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can I take it off when I leave?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wear the Mask when the role calls for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polish it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use it well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let it protect what deserves protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But occasionally return somewhere private enough to place it on the table and remember the face underneath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A tool carried long enough can begin to feel like part of the hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An identity worn long enough can do the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is
