{"id":797,"date":"2026-08-17T22:06:03","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T22:06:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=797"},"modified":"2026-08-18T22:09:53","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T22:09:53","slug":"place-the-two-maps-beside-each-other","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=797","title":{"rendered":"Place the Two Maps Beside Each Other"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Motivation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cMy family is the most important thing in my life.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;ve worked every weekend for the last six months.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You could say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWell, obviously your family isn&#8217;t actually your priority.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congratulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have discovered the fastest route from reflection to defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is another way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Put the two statements beside each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Discrepancy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A discrepancy is a gap between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What someone values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What someone wants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who someone believes they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where someone wants to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is currently happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These gaps can create motivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But they become much harder to examine when someone else uses them as a weapon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Two Maps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One map says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Where I want to go.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Where my current path appears to lead.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage does not need to shout:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYOU ARE GOING THE WRONG WAY.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it is enough to unfold both maps on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask About Values First<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat matters most to you about being a parent?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They answer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeing present. I don&#8217;t want my kids remembering me as someone who was always working.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later they describe seventy-hour workweeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You now understand the discrepancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But let them see it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reflect Both Sides<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cBeing present for your kids matters enormously to you, and work has been taking most of your available time.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah. That&#8217;s the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the motivation belongs to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Not Add Shame<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bad:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf family really mattered, you&#8217;d make time.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This attacks identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shame often creates defense rather than movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIt sounds like the way things are working right now doesn&#8217;t leave you much room for something you care about.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gap remains visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without the knife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Values Are Not Always Behavior<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans are complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person can genuinely value health and smoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Value family and work constantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Value honesty and avoid a difficult truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Value freedom and remain somewhere they hate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not automatically make the value fake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may mean competing forces are stronger than the value in the current system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is what needs understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask About the Destination<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf things were going the way you wanted, what would be different?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;d have dinner with my kids most nights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Current reality:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One night a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the discrepancy has coordinates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask About the Current Path<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf nothing changes for another year, what do you think happens?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not as a threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI burn out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy marriage gets worse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI probably gain more weight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ll still be complaining about the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are looking down the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Let Silence Work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes after placing the maps beside each other, stop talking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou want to be home more, and you&#8217;ve taken on another project that will keep you away three nights a week.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let them think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not immediately solve the discomfort you just helped reveal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discomfort may contain information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask How the Pieces Fit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A very clean question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHow does that fit with what you said earlier about wanting more time at home?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Curious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not prosecutorial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may have an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI need the money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the apparent contradiction has context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Missing Constraint<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps someone values family and works constantly because:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medical bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Job insecurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Caregiving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discrepancy does not prove hypocrisy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may reveal constraint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the useful conversation changes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How can we protect the value inside the constraint?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much better question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Identity Discrepancy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m the kind of person who keeps my word.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They describe repeatedly canceling commitments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You could attack:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cApparently not.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cKeeping your word seems important to how you see yourself. How are you feeling about these cancellations?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now they examine the mismatch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Future-Self Discrepancy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat kind of person do you want to be five years from now?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cDoes your current routine seem to be moving you toward that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can be powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But use carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are helping someone compare trajectories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not writing their destiny for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mirror Must Be Accurate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not manufacture contradictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI care about my career.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cBut you also said family matters. Which is it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">False choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both can matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans can carry multiple values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real discrepancy may be about balance, not allegiance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Competing Values<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want adventure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There may be no perfect solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conversation becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How much of each?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which one is the real you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the map contains two destinations pulling in different directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is legitimate terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Discrepancy Can Reveal Change Already Happening<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI used to drink every night. Now it&#8217;s mostly weekends, but I still don&#8217;t like how much I&#8217;m drinking.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not ignore the movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;ve already changed the pattern significantly, and you&#8217;re still not where you want to be.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Progress and remaining distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask Them to Measure the Gap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHow close is your life right now to what you want in this area?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFour out of ten.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat would a five look like?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the enormous discrepancy becomes one step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Useful magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Not Decide Their Values for Them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou should care more about your health.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that is your value statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat matters to you about your health, if anything?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the answer is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want enough mobility to travel when I&#8217;m older.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much stronger foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sometimes They Accept the Discrepancy and Choose Not to Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYes. I know work is costing me family time. Right now I&#8217;m choosing work because we need the money.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That may be a considered decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage does not need to force moral resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They saw both maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They chose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Agency remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mage&#8217;s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When someone feels stuck, listen for two things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What they say matters.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is currently happening.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If there is distance between them, do not immediately accuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Place the maps beside each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou said X matters to you, and Y seems to be happening. How do those fit together for you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There may be hypocrisy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Constraint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Competing values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A changing priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A problem they are finally ready to address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not know until they look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People often already carry the compass required for change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What they lack is a clear view of where the current road leads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not grab the compass from their hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not announce the destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just clear enough space on the table to unfold both maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>place the two maps beside each other.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Motivation Someone says: \u201cMy family is the most important thing in my life.\u201d Later: \u201cI&#8217;ve worked every weekend for the last six months.\u201d You could say: \u201cWell, obviously your family isn&#8217;t actually your priority.\u201d Congratulations.
