{"id":789,"date":"2026-08-17T22:02:03","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T22:02:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=789"},"modified":"2026-08-18T22:09:53","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T22:09:53","slug":"give-them-something-to-catch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=789","title":{"rendered":"Give Them Something to Catch"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Rapport<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat did you do this weekend?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They try again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWatch anything good?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeen working on anything?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow&#8217;s that going?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this point, the other person is not having a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are mining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the ground is hostile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conversational Generosity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good conversation requires material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Observations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opinions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Small disclosures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Things the other person can pick up and do something with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversational generosity means contributing enough that the interaction does not depend entirely on the other person generating momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Give the Ball Back With Something Attached<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHow was your weekend?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cPretty good. I found this tiny bookstore I&#8217;d never noticed before and lost an hour in there.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now there are handles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bookstore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neighborhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Getting pleasantly lost somewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other person has something to catch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The One-Word Wall<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some people believe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If they want to know more, they&#8217;ll ask.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if every answer requires another extraction attempt, eventually people stop asking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversation should not feel like requesting information from a reluctant government agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Offer a little more than the minimum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Answer Plus One<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A simple spell:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Answer the question, then add one useful piece.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow&#8217;s work?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cBusy. We&#8217;re preparing for a launch next week, so everyone is running around.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhere are you from?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cKansas City. I&#8217;ve lived in a few other places, but I keep ending up back in the Midwest.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat are you drinking?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cGinger beer. I like anything aggressively ginger-flavored.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plus one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suddenly conversation has branches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Return the Ball<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can also add:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHow about you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simple reciprocity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But do not make this automatic after every sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Otherwise:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow was your weekend?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood, yours?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood. Work?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFine, yours?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have invented conversational ping-pong with no ball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Respond to what they actually said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Offer Opinions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neutrality can become strangely difficult to talk to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat music do you like?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cAnything.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat food?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhatever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMovies?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don&#8217;t care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are allowed preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI love old science fiction.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can&#8217;t stand overly sweet drinks.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think thunderstorms are fantastic.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Preferences create shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shape gives conversation something to interact with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You Do Not Need Strong Opinions About Everything<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The opposite problem exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every subject becomes a manifesto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coffee?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twenty-minute lecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shoes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Civilizational analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Weather?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Geopolitics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Generosity means giving usable material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not emptying the warehouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tell the Small Story<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHow did you get that scar?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You could say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBike.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI tried to jump a drainage ditch on a bike when I was twelve. The ditch won.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much better conversational object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans like stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even tiny ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leave Handles in Your Stories<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good conversational contribution often contains multiple possible paths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI started taking pottery classes because a friend dragged me to one. I&#8217;m terrible at it, but I love the wheel.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other person can ask about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pottery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being terrible at things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trying new hobbies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You gave them several doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">React<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversational generosity is not only supplying facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone tells you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI quit my job yesterday.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe they need slightly more evidence of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhoa. Was that planned?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat sounds huge. How are you feeling about it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reaction tells the speaker their words landed somewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Laugh When Something Is Funny<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This sounds obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet some people become so focused on saying the correct thing that they stop visibly participating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversation is embodied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raise an eyebrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat&#8217;s wild.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let your responses exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are not a transcript-processing machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Volunteer Context<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone should not need seventeen follow-up questions to understand your sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m moving.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNorth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSoon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWork.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This person has become a side character in a game with an intentionally frustrating dialogue tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m moving north next month for a new job.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Human bandwidth restored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Help the Shy Speaker<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversational generosity becomes especially important when the other person is nervous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you answer every question minimally, they may assume:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You dislike them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are bothering you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are failing socially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A warmer answer gives them traction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not have to perform extroversion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just give them somewhere to place the next step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Help the New Person<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a gathering, someone knows nobody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can offer context:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cMost of us know each other from the climbing gym. Sarah over there organizes these dinners.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now they have a map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rapport includes helping people understand the social terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Introduce Threads<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversation slows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Offer something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI saw the strangest thing on the way here.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHave you ever been to that market downtown?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou mentioned you like horror movies\u2014have you seen anything good lately?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not need to wait for the other person to rescue every silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carry some rope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Let Silence Exist Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversational generosity does not mean filling every empty second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silence can be comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thoughtful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Am I constantly producing words?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Am I contributing to this interaction?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes your contribution is listening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it is leaving room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Not Keep Score<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI asked three questions and they only asked two.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Careful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversation is not tennis officiated by accountants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some people show interest differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some speak more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some listen more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look at the overall pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does the interaction feel mutual?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is more useful than counting turns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Notice Chronic One-Sidedness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, patterns matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you always:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Initiate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the other person provides almost nothing\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">that is information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps they are shy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps distracted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps uninterested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps simply conversationally passive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not have to condemn them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you also do not have to carry every interaction
