a strange assumption about connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If two people want to become closer, they must sit facing one another and discuss increasingly personal things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tell me about your childhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What are your fears?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What do you want from life?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But humans have another ancient way of becoming close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They stand beside each other\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and look at something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shared Attention<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two people watch a fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walk through a market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Repair a machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Play a game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cook dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look at clouds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Watch birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Explore a museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listen to music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suddenly conversation becomes easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because attention no longer has to remain pointed directly at each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a third thing in the circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Third Thing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine two strangers sitting across from each other at an empty table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now put a chessboard between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or a strange painting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A campfire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A deck of cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A broken radio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something has entered the social space that neither person has to manufacture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world begins helping with the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Side-by-Side Is Different Magic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Face-to-face says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You are the object of my attention.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Side-by-side says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>We are attending to this together.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But side-by-side connection can feel easier, especially when people do not yet know each other well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is less demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Less performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Comment on the World<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are standing near someone at an event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not know them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You could attempt:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cTell me about yourself.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat is an incredible jacket.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI have no idea what that sculpture is supposed to be, but I kind of love it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now there is something to respond to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shared attention creates an entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Curiosity Can Point Outward<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHave you tried this?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat do you think of that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cDid you see what just happened?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cDo you know what kind of bird that is?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None require biography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet biography often emerges naturally afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Activity Removes Some Pressure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People sometimes talk more while:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cooking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Playing games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hands are occupied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eyes can move elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silence does not automatically mean failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The activity carries some of the interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can make difficult subjects easier too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Walking Conversation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walking is particularly good magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two people face the same direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The environment changes continuously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silences feel natural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Movement regulates some of the body&#8217;s restless energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And conversation can deepen without feeling like an interrogation room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a reason humans have discussed important things while walking for a very long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Make Something Together<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Connection can form through cooperative making?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And underneath it, quietly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How do we work together?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rapport is being built through action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Play Together<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Games are social laboratories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They reveal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Risk tolerance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Competitiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Useful information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And because the stakes are often artificial, personality can emerge safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teach and Learn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cShow me how you do that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Powerful sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It communicates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You know something I do not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am interested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am willing to enter your world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-heading\">Let Them Show You Their World<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone likes motorcycles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You know nothing about motorcycles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat do you like about this one?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not need to pretend expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their enthusiasm can carry the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rapport does not require matching knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Curiosity is enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr autobiography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This catches my attention. Come look.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shared Beauty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes there is nothing to explain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sunset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversation has not failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something larger has temporarily entered it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shared awe is rapport too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shared Absurdity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A peacock screams from somewhere nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both people look at each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat was that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Connection achieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world constantly produces free conversational material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is extremely generous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shared Difficulty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are both trying to assemble furniture from incomprehensible instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThis diagram was clearly drawn by an enemy.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now you have an alliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Small shared difficulties not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps you simply move through the world together for twenty minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Connection can begin rebuilding before the perfect words arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Not Use Activity to Avoid Everything<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some people can work beside each other for twenty years and never discuss the thing that desperately needs discussing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shared activity is a bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It should not become permanent camouflage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strange thing happening across the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world is constantly offering objects of shared attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not always have to generate connection from inside
