You are not going to believe what just happened.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And you respond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI acknowledge your apparent excitement and invite you to elaborate.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technically excellent English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Socially, you have arrived wearing a spacesuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversation has rhythm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you lead someone somewhere else, it helps to find the rhythm they are already walking in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Matching<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matching means adjusting aspects of your communication to fit the person and situation in front of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their volume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their vocabulary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their formality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their emotional intensity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their amount of detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not copying them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not performing an impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meeting them somewhere recognizable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Wrong Gear<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says quietly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI had a rough day.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You explode:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cOH NO! WHAT HAPPENED?!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another person bursts in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI GOT THE JOB!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You respond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is positive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also perhaps too little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rapport often begins with choosing approximately the correct gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Match Energy Before Changing Energy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone is excited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meet some excitement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone is grieving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Slow down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone is frightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not immediately become aggressively cheerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone is angry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not need to become angry too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But speaking as though nothing significant is happening may feel strangely disconnected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First communicate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I see where you are.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then movement becomes easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pacing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pacing means staying with someone&#8217;s current experience long enough that they feel accompanied rather than managed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m furious.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You immediately:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou need to calm down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is not pacing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYeah. I can hear how angry you are.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cTell me what happened.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have joined them at the current location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leading Comes Later<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After pacing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cOkay. What do you want to do about it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now perhaps the conversation moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the basic rhythm:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Meet.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Move.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trying to move someone before meeting them often creates resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Match Vocabulary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One person says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What does this mean for next week?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither style is universally superior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice how much map the person is asking for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Match Speed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some people think aloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their sentences arrive quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ideas Emotional Scale<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone loses their favorite pen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are mildly annoyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not respond as though the kingdom has fallen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone loses a parent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou felt completely class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then facts can be examined without making recognition conditional on factual precision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rapport Is Not Manipulation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matching can be used mechanically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Copy posture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Repeat keywords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mirror breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gain trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sell something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans have written entire manuals like to become them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rapport does not require sameness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It requires enough adaptation that both people can find each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two instruments do not need to play the same note to play together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mage&#8217;s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When entering a conversation, notice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How fast are they speaking?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How much energy are they carrying?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How formal is the room?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How much detail do they want?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are they looking for seriousness?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humor?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Space?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Warmth?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Precision?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then adjust a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not enough to disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
