See you tomorrow.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Others refuse to die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The important points have been made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone understands the disagreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing new has been said for twenty minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And still:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cBut what I&#8217;m saying is\u2014\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spell has completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone simply needs to stop casting it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Graceful Exit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A graceful exit ends a conversation without pretending something happened that did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Complete understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Emotional resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think we&#8217;ve gotten as far as we&#8217;re going to get tonight.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">is enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is not necessarily failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may be accurate navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conversations Have Useful Limits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a point where additional words stop producing additional understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You explain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You clarify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They clarify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually the conversation reaches a frontier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Repetition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Frustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fatigue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Escalation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage learns to recognize diminishing returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Agreement Is Not Required<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI understand your position. I still disagree.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The universe remains intact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans sometimes treat disagreement as an unfinished conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not always.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps both people understand perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They simply want different things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More explanation will not necessarily create convergence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Understanding Can Be the Ending<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t agree with why you did it, but I understand why you made the decision.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That may be enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think we understand each other better, even though neither of us changed our mind.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Successful conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No conversion required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Broken Record<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A useful warning sign:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You hear yourself saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cLike I said\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">for the fourth time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the same sentence has been cast repeatedly without effect, another identical casting is unlikely to unlock the secret ending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIs there anything new we need to add?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Name the Remaining Disagreement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of leaving in fog:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSo we agree about what happened, but we disagree about whether it was justified.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWe both want this fixed. We disagree about how.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the unresolved piece has edges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That makes it easier to put down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">End Without the Final Strike<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cOkay. Let&#8217;s leave it there.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, while walking away:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI just hope someday you realize how ridiculous you&#8217;re being.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sword was apparently still equipped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are ending the conversation\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">end it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not throw one final dagger through the closing door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Not Require the Last Word<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGreat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We may continue until sunrise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the strongest final word is no word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let the conversation land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exit With Respect<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Possible spells:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI appreciate you talking this through with me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think I understand where you&#8217;re coming from now.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWe&#8217;re not going to agree on this, and that&#8217;s okay.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI want to think about what you said.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cLet&#8217;s leave this here for tonight.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None require surrender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They simply close the gate carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preserve the Relationship When Appropriate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI disagree with you about this.
