say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat&#8217;s my boundary.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes what follows is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou aren&#8217;t allowed to talk to that person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That may be a demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may be a relationship condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may even be reasonable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a boundary has a particular shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A boundary does not primarily describe what <strong>you must do.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It describes what <strong>I will do.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The circle goes around my feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Boundary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A boundary says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf this happens, this is how I will respond.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf you yell at me, I will leave the conversation.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice what it does not say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou are forbidden from yelling.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You control whether you yell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I control whether I remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction is the foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Request, Boundary, Demand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These creatures are related.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A request:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cPlease don&#8217;t yell at me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A boundary:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf yelling starts, I&#8217;ll end the conversation and we can try again later.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A demand:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou will stop yelling right now.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on context, any of these might be appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage simply knows which spell is being cast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Boundaries Need Consequences You Control<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf you keep drinking, you&#8217;ll stop.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not a boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not control the second half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf you continue drinking around me, I won&#8217;t spend time with you while you&#8217;re drinking.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now both sides belong to their respective owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Boundary Is Not the Punishment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose someone insults you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boundary:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf you insult me, I&#8217;m leaving.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Punishment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf you insult me, I&#8217;ll make sure everyone knows what kind of person you are.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A boundary protects something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Punishment attempts to impose pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes consequences naturally hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That does not automatically make them punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is this action for?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protection?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or retaliation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Say What You Will Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This makes boundaries much clearer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou need to respect my time.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf you&#8217;re more than thirty minutes late without contacting me, I&#8217;m going to leave rather than keep waiting.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now \u201crespect\u201d has become observable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone knows where the line is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Boundaries Can Be About Access<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m not discussing my finances with you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No threat required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m happy to talk about my work. I&#8217;m not discussing my relationship.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A boundary can simply identify which doors are open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are not required to provide universal access because someone asked a question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Boundaries Can Be About Time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can help for an hour.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beautiful boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ll help until everything is finished and quietly become furious.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clock exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Boundaries Can Be About Energy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t have the capacity for this conversation tonight.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes legitimate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if the conversation matters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can talk tomorrow afternoon.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second sentence helps distinguish regulation from disappearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A boundary can close a door temporarily while still leaving a return path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Boundaries Can Be About Communication<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI won&#8217;t continue this conversation while we&#8217;re insulting each other.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>we.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boundary applies to the conditions of the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you start insulting them too, the rule still exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A boundary is much easier to respect when it is not secretly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rules for thee.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Other Person May Dislike Your Boundary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This surprises people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You communicate clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Respectfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calmly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the other person says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat&#8217;s ridiculous.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A boundary does not require agreement to exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are allowed to dislike it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are allowed to maintain it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">They May Choose the Consequence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf you continue shouting, I&#8217;m leaving.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They continue shouting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now comes the difficult part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Otherwise you did not establish a boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You announced a preference with dramatic formatting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boundaries become real through behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Not Threaten What You Will Not Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf this happens again, I&#8217;m never speaking to you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you mean that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then do not say it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A boundary you repeatedly fail to enforce teaches everyone\u2014including you\u2014that your words do not describe your behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Choose consequences you can actually carry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Start Smaller<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf the conversation becomes insulting, I&#8217;ll take a twenty-minute break.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much easier to enforce than:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf you ever disrespect me again, our relationship is over.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some boundaries concern enormous matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many do not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use the smallest effective circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Boundary Can Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Circumstances change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trust grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trust shrinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A boundary that made sense last year may not fit now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That does not make the old boundary fake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It means the map changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can redraw a circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Boundaries Are Not Universal Laws<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cNobody should ever call after 8 p.m.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t answer non-emergency calls after 8 p.m.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">See the difference?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One attempts to legislate civilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other describes your availability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much easier jurisdiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Relationships Have Agreements Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every interpersonal limit is an individual boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some are agreements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWe agreed not to share each other&#8217;s private messages.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now if the agreement is broken, the conversation is not merely:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy boundary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWe had an agreement, and it was violated.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Useful distinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Words matter because they help identify what actually happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some Boundaries Are Conditions of Relationship<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI won&#8217;t remain in a romantic relationship where there is ongoing infidelity.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is a boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It affects another person enormously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it still describes your participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They remain free to choose their behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You remain free to choose whether the relationship continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Freedom does not mean freedom from consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Not Call Control a Boundary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cMy boundary is that you can&#8217;t wear that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try saying the actual thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m uncomfortable with you wearing that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now you can discuss the discomfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calling something a boundary does not automatically make attempts to control another person&#8217;s choices ethically untouchable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Magic words do not replace examination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Boundaries Can Be Kind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People sometimes imagine boundaries as walls covered in spikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They can be simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can&#8217;t lend money, but I can help you look at options.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can&#8217;t stay tonight.
