Topic Containment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Topic containment means keeping a conversation focused on the issue currently being discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because other issues are unimportant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because trying to solve twelve problems simultaneously usually means solving none of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mage draws a circle around one creature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This one first.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Expanding Argument<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A disagreement naturally produces associations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou didn’t call.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reminds me of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The time you were late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which reminds me of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the beginning of a difficult conversation, it can help to define the object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Side Quest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During the conversation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not automatically chase it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat may be something we need to talk about too. Can we finish what happened yesterday first?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The side quest has been logged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not have to accept it immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the new topic genuinely matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People often introduce another grievance because they fear it will disappear if they let the current topic continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Show them it has been recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Containment Is Not Avoidance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is an important difference between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe’re not talking about that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI will talk about that. I don’t want to mix it into this conversation.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One closes the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other schedules another room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you repeatedly promise to return and never do, containment becomes evasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep the quest log honestly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

One Event or One Pattern?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the current event is evidence of a larger pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone is late once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone is late to eight of the last ten meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can still contain the conversation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’m not only upset about today. I’m concerned because this has happened repeatedly.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the topic is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every bad thing you have ever done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The topic is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recurring lateness pattern.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still bounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do Not Summon Character<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Event:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou didn’t text me when you were going to be late.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the conversation has moved from behavior to identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Identity is difficult terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What exactly are they supposed to do with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are fundamentally inconsiderate?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep the monster concrete when possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beware \u201cAlways\u201d and \u201cNever\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

These words open portals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other person only needs one counterexample.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now you are arguing about the historical accuracy of always<\/strong> instead of the actual problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis has happened several times recently.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much easier to work with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Don’t Bring Reinforcements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd my sister agrees with me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wonderful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now your sister has joined the battle despite not being present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEveryone thinks you do this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who is everyone?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do they have uniforms?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unless other people’s views are directly relevant, keep the conversation between the people actually having it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t Weaponize the Archive<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Relationships accumulate enormous databases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Old mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Embarrassing moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Confessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weaknesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Things said in vulnerability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can use this archive as ammunition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They introduce another issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI hear that there are other problems. I want to finish one.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This may feel repetitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Containment sometimes requires holding the circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

When You Are the One Expanding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Notice your own mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You become angry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suddenly every grievance you have ever stored begins volunteering for military service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does this evidence actually help solve the current issue?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leave it in the archive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not every true complaint belongs in every argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Separate Practical From Emotional<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes two topics are tangled because one is practical and one is relational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Otherwise the conversation may bounce between dollars and trust until nobody knows which question they are answering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finish Something<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Containment allows a rare and beautiful experience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Completion.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe agreed that from now on, whoever receives the bill puts it on the calendar.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One monster handled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next encounter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clean transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some Monsters Travel in Packs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not every issue can be separated neatly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Money may involve trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trust may involve secrecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secrecy may involve fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human problems have ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Containment does not mean pretending connections do not exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It means choosing which part of the ecosystem you are examining right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
