{"id":747,"date":"2026-08-17T21:34:05","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T21:34:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=747"},"modified":"2026-08-18T22:10:32","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T22:10:32","slug":"pick-up-your-side-of-the-broken-glass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=747","title":{"rendered":"Pick Up Your Side of the Broken Glass"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Repair<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two people have a terrible conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later, each produces the same report:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThis was entirely their fault.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes even true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But remarkably often, both people have fingerprints on the wreckage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Repair becomes much easier when somebody becomes willing to look for theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your Side<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taking responsibility does not mean saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cEverything was my fault.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It means asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat part of this belongs to me?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe ten percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe fifty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe ninety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe none.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is not equal blame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is accurate ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Find the Piece You Can Own<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou didn&#8217;t listen to anything I said.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You think:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is unfair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you also interrupted them repeatedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t agree that I ignored everything you said. I do agree that I kept interrupting you, and that made it harder for you to feel heard.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have not surrendered the entire argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You picked up your piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Partial Ownership<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conflict often becomes stuck because each person believes admitting any fault means accepting all fault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So both defend everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI shouldn&#8217;t have yelled, <strong>but you\u2014<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI only said that because <strong>you\u2014<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wouldn&#8217;t have done it if <strong>you\u2014<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone is holding their mistake hostage until the other person confesses first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Partial ownership breaks the stalemate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cRegardless of what you did, I shouldn&#8217;t have said that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now one piece has been removed from the battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Magical Word \u201cAnd\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compare:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m sorry I yelled, but you weren&#8217;t listening.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m sorry I yelled. You weren&#8217;t listening, and I still shouldn&#8217;t have yelled.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>but<\/strong> quietly attempts to erase the apology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>and<\/strong> allows both truths to remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Context Is Not Exoneration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You were exhausted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You were frightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You were provoked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You misunderstood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You had been dealing with the problem for months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All may matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Context explains behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It does not automatically excuse it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI was exhausted and overwhelmed. That&#8217;s why I snapped. It still wasn&#8217;t fair to speak to you that way.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Take Their Side for Them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is another mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You become so committed to accountability that you begin assigning yourself responsibility for the other person&#8217;s behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI shouldn&#8217;t have made you angry enough to break the door.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may have contributed to the argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They broke the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Separate the pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your behavior belongs to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their behavior belongs to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Repair becomes distorted when responsibility crosses property lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Over-Ownership Is Not Virtue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some people automatically say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIt&#8217;s my fault.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">because taking blame feels safer than conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I caused it, perhaps I can control it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I apologize quickly, perhaps the anger stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is not necessarily healthy accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat exactly did I do?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specificity protects against both denial and unnecessary guilt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Under-Ownership<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The opposite creature:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI did nothing wrong.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remarkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If every conflict in someone&#8217;s life is entirely caused by other people, either they are experiencing an extraordinary statistical anomaly\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">or the map may be incomplete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat could I have done differently, even if I still think my main position was right?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That question often finds something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Own the Process Even When You Stand by the Decision<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps you made the correct decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But communicated it badly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI still think canceling was the right call. I should have told you before I did it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not need to regret the decision to regret the method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Own the Impact You Could Have Predicted<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI didn&#8217;t mean to embarrass you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But perhaps you criticized them in front of twelve people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You could reasonably have predicted embarrassment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI should have brought that up privately.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stronger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Intent matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So does foreseeable impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Own What You Failed to Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Responsibility includes omissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You didn&#8217;t lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you withheld something important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You didn&#8217;t insult them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you stood silently while someone else did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You didn&#8217;t break the agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you noticed it breaking and said nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes your piece of the glass is shaped like absence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask What Your Part Looked Like From Their Side<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A useful question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat did I do that made this harder?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not have to accept every accusation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But perhaps there is information there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou kept checking your phone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou laughed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou wouldn&#8217;t answer the question.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou kept bringing up old stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now you have something specific to examine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You Can Disagree With Their Accounting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThis is fifty percent your fault.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You think:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not need to negotiate percentages like an insurance company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t agree with everything you&#8217;re putting on me. I do agree that I should have told you sooner.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Own the piece you recognize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leave the rest for discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ownership Changes the Atmosphere<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is something disarming about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re right about that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially during conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not strategically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Genuinely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other person may have prepared seventeen arguments proving you wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suddenly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One sword lowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps another follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your accountability should not depend on theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Not Use Ownership as a Trade<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cFine. I apologized. Now you apologize.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes mutual accountability is necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But your admission should not become currency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You own your behavior because it belongs to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If their behavior also needs addressing, address it separately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clean Your Side Even If They Don&#8217;t<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You acknowledge your mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They refuse to acknowledge theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That feels unfair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their refusal does not make your part disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m taking responsibility for what I did. I still need us to address what you did too.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both can stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Broken Glass<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After conflict, people often spend enormous energy deciding who dropped the glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But eventually there is glass on the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone has to stop walking through it barefoot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your first question can be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhich pieces are mine?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pick those up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThese pieces are yours.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other person decides what they will do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mage&#8217;s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After your next difficult interaction, resist both easy stories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cEverything was my fault.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cNothing was my fault.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What did I say?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What did I fail to say?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where did I escalate?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where did I assume?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where was I unfair?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where did I behave exactly as I intended?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where does responsibility actually stop?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then own precisely that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accountability is not self-punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is accurate inventory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when something between two people shatters, you do not need to claim every shard in the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if you want repair to begin\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>pick up your side of the broken glass.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Repair Two people have a terrible conversation.
