{"id":743,"date":"2026-08-17T21:32:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T21:32:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=743"},"modified":"2026-08-18T22:11:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T22:11:19","slug":"find-the-part-you-can-say-yes-to","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=743","title":{"rendered":"Find the Part You Can Say Yes To"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Repair<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says something you disagree with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your mind immediately finds the incorrect part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Efficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Precise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes that is exactly the answer required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But sometimes there is another piece of the statement sitting right beside the disagreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A piece you actually understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Find that first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Validation Is Not Agreement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This distinction matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Validation means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I can understand how you got there.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Agreement means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I think you are correct.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are not the same spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou obviously don&#8217;t care about this project.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You disagree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But perhaps you have missed two deadlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can see why the missed deadlines made it look like I wasn&#8217;t taking this seriously. I do care about the project, and I need to handle the deadlines better.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You validated the evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You did not accept the conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Find the Valid Piece<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou never listen to me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Never?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Probably inaccurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But immediately arguing about the word <strong>never<\/strong> may miss the useful information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;ve interrupted you several times tonight. I can understand why you&#8217;re feeling unheard.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You found the piece you can honestly say yes to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the conversation has somewhere to stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Yes Before the No<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWe should cancel the whole project.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You disagree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI agree the current plan isn&#8217;t working. I don&#8217;t think we need to cancel the project, though.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plan has problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cancellation is not your preferred solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Validation Lowers the Need to Prove<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People often repeat themselves because they believe the important part has not landed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know, but\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, listen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI heard you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, you didn&#8217;t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re worried that if we wait another month, we&#8217;ll lose the opportunity entirely.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now disagree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI still think waiting is the safer option.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disagreement remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the person no longer has to fight two battles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make you understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And make you agree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Validate Emotion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone is angry about something you think is minor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not begin with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re overreacting.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can see this mattered more to you than I realized.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is often enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are not declaring the event objectively catastrophic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are recognizing its significance to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Validate the Logic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you can understand the reasoning while rejecting the conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cGiven what you knew at the time, I understand why you thought I had canceled.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cBut I hadn&#8217;t.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other person does not need to be stupid for the misunderstanding to have happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Validate the Value<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone refuses your suggestion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You think they are making a mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listen for what they are protecting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI understand why keeping your independence matters so much to you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m still worried you&#8217;re taking on more than you can safely manage alone.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now independence has been respected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Concern remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is much stronger than treating their value as merely an obstacle to your preferred outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Validate Without Inventing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not manufacture agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI completely understand.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think I understand part of it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can see why that piece bothered you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Precision matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">False validation feels strange because it is strange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cThat Makes Sense\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Powerful phrase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dangerous phrase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI punched the wall because I was angry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat makes sense.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Careful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the feeling makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The action may not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI understand that you were extremely angry. Punching the wall still wasn&#8217;t okay.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Validate the part that is actually valid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not blur emotion, reasoning, and behavior into one package.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Grain of Truth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Criticism often arrives badly packaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re selfish and you don&#8217;t care about anyone.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ugly package.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe inside it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You made an important decision without consulting them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Find the grain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re right that I made the decision without asking you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stop there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not have to accept:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Selfish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Uncaring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take the useful information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leave the rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">This Works Internally Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your own mind says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI ruined everything.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Probably too large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Find the valid part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI handled that conversation badly.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specificity allows repair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m terrible at this.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t know how to do this yet.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The valid difficulty remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unnecessary identity sentence falls away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Validation Can Come After the No<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes safety or boundaries require the no first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cNo. I&#8217;m not lending you the car tonight.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI understand why you&#8217;re frustrated. You were counting on it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Validation is not a ritual requiring a particular word order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reality decides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Use Validation as Bait<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a manipulative version:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI totally understand how you feel, but\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">followed by fifteen minutes demonstrating that you do not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Validation is not the conversational equivalent of coating medicine in cheese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you recognize something, recognize it genuinely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other person may still reject your conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You Can Understand and Still Refuse<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This may be the most important form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI understand why you&#8217;re asking.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m still saying no.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI understand that you&#8217;re angry.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m still leaving if you keep shouting at me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Understanding does not dissolve boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compassion does not require surrender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can stand firmly and still recognize the human being standing opposite you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mage&#8217;s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next time disagreement appears, delay your counterargument for one moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What part of what they said can I honestly recognize?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The emotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The logic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The misunderstanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Name that part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re right about\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can see why\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat part makes sense to me\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then say what remains true for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No deception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No surrender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No requirement that one person&#8217;s reality consume the other&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes a conversation becomes repairable when neither person has to choose between being understood and being disagreed with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Find the piece that is true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Put your hand on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Yes. This part. I see it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, if necessary\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">say no to the rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Repair Someone says something you disagree with.
