dishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least, technically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI asked you to put them away.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cAnd I said I would.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou always say that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy are you making this such a big deal?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause you never listen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am listening!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dishes are now sitting quietly in the kitchen wondering how they became responsible for the collapse of civilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At some point, discussing the dishes harder will not help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You need to talk about the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Meta-Communication<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meta-communication means communicating <strong>about the communication itself.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of continuing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cBut the dishes\u2014\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">you say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think we&#8217;re getting more upset with each other and farther away from what I was trying to talk about.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have stepped outside the spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The original subject remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But now the interaction itself is visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">There Are Always Two Conversations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most difficult conversations contain at least two layers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>content<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who pays the bill?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happened yesterday?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When are we leaving?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who was supposed to call?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the <strong>process<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are you listening to me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are you attacking me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do I feel safe answering honestly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are we trying to solve this or win?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do I believe you understand me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The content can become impossible to resolve when the process is damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Name What Is Happening<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the most useful sentence is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t think we&#8217;re talking about the same thing anymore.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWe&#8217;re both repeating ourselves.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI notice I&#8217;m getting defensive.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cEvery time I explain my point, you hear it as criticism.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think we&#8217;re trying to solve this before we&#8217;ve understood each other.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the invisible machinery is on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Name Yourself First<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meta-communication becomes dangerous when it sounds like diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re being irrational.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not particularly meta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mostly insult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m having trouble following where we&#8217;re going.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m starting to feel defensive, and I think that&#8217;s making me argue instead of listen.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You know your own internal state better than theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start there when possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Name the Pattern Without Naming a Villain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose every disagreement follows the same route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One person pushes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other withdraws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first pushes harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second withdraws farther.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou always shut down.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think something keeps happening between us. When I feel you pulling away, I push harder to get an answer. Then I think my pushing makes you pull away even more.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look at that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The enemy is no longer necessarily either person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The enemy may be the loop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fight the Loop Together<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Us versus the pattern.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Me versus you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe keep interrupting each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe keep trying to solve three problems at once.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe keep bringing old arguments into this one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe seem to get sarcastic when either of us feels cornered.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now both people can potentially attack the monster instead of each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Very Mage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Say What You Think They Are Hearing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think when I say I need more time, you&#8217;re hearing that I don&#8217;t care.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other person can respond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, I&#8217;m hearing that you&#8217;re avoiding the decision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Either way, the invisible interpretation becomes visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now you can work with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Say What You Meant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat came out differently than I intended.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the finest repair spells in the entire school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat I meant was\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No elaborate defense required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes words leave your mouth wearing armor you did not pack for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retrieve them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask About the Conversation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When confused:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHow is this conversation feeling to you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interesting question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLike you&#8217;re interrogating me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You did not know that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat&#8217;s not what I want. Let me change how I&#8217;m asking.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Repair begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask What They Need From the Conversation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes two people enter with different missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One wants to vent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One wants to solve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One wants an apology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One wants facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One wants reassurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One wants a decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chaos follows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat are you hoping we accomplish here?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe the entire conflict suddenly makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Declare Your Own Mission<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Likewise:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m not trying to convince you to agree with me. I want you to understand why I made the decision.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI do want us to make a decision tonight.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m not asking you to fix this. I need to tell you why it hurt.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quest objective updated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone now knows what dungeon they entered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Notice When the Medium Is Wrong<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some conversations should not happen through text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some should not happen in public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some should not happen at midnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some should not happen while one person is driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meta-communication includes saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t think texting is helping us understand each other. Can we talk?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem may not be the message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may be the channel carrying it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Name the Temperature<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWe&#8217;re both getting heated.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re getting hysterical.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Less useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can feel myself getting too angry to say this carefully.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI want to keep talking, but I need twenty minutes.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is not necessarily avoidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can be maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Pause Needs a Bridge Back<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you pause a difficult conversation, say when or how you intend to return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI need a break. Can we come back to this after dinner?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m done.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and disappearing for three days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A pause without a bridge can feel like abandonment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A pause with a return point can feel like regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sometimes Say the Awkward Thing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThis feels awkward.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone knew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody said it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think we&#8217;re both being extremely polite because neither of us wants to say what we&#8217;re actually worried about.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hidden room opens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meta-communication often works because it names something already present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Meta-Communicate Every Breath<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a nightmare version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI noticed you paused for 1.7 seconds before answering.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please stop observing the specimen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversation must still be lived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meta-communication is useful when the process itself is obstructing the content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not when you simply enjoy watching the machinery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mage&#8217;s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a conversation starts looping, stop arguing the subject for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look at the interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What are we doing right now?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Repeating?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defending?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interrupting?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avoiding?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Escalating?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solving the wrong problem?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trying to accomplish different things?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then name it gently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think we&#8217;re stuck in a loop.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That sentence changes the camera angle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suddenly two people who were trapped inside the conversation can look at the conversation together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The argument becomes an object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pattern becomes visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And once something becomes visible, sometimes it becomes changeable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the spell itself starts controlling the room\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>step outside the spell.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Repair Two people are arguing about dishes.
