should.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI guess.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;ll try.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m going to.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are not the same creature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the mistakes people make when helping someone change is hearing the faintest sound of agreement and immediately treating it like a contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage learns to listen for weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Polite Yes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou should really start looking for another job.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSeriously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo you&#8217;re going to?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A commitment has apparently been created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Except perhaps the person was only trying to make the conversation stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans say yes for many reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Politeness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exhaustion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avoiding conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A real commitment needs more than the correct syllable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Desire Is Not Commitment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI want to get stronger.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI should start training again.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI could probably train twice a week.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI need to do something.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None necessarily mean:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I have decided to act.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not rush them across the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Listen for Commitment Language<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually something changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m going to call tomorrow.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;ll talk to her tonight.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m done putting this off.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI decided to apply.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cStarting Monday, I&#8217;m walking after dinner.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the language has weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The person is no longer only discussing change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are placing themselves into the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reflect the Commitment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you hear it, give it back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;ve decided.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re going to call tomorrow.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This lets the person hear their own commitment clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes they strengthen it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah. First thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes they weaken it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell\u2026 I think so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now you know the commitment was not as solid as it first sounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Better to discover that here than pretend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Inflate Their Words<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI might call.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You reflect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSo you&#8217;re going to call.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have upgraded their commitment without permission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That creates pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reflect accurately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re considering calling.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe they respond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, I think I actually am going to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They strengthened the language themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Difference Between \u201cTry\u201d and \u201cWill\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;ll try to get there.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps that is the most honest statement available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not automatically challenge it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But when clarity matters, ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cShould I plan as though you&#8217;re coming, or is it still uncertain?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now everyone knows what \u201ctry\u201d means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is especially important when other people need to make plans around the commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask How Certain the Decision Feels<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A useful question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHow settled does that decision feel?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCompletely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHonestly, not very.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the conversation can return to ambivalence instead of constructing an action plan on top of a decision that doesn&#8217;t exist yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Not Demand the Oath<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a temptation to make people prove seriousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cPromise me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSay you&#8217;re going to do it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI need you to commit right now.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes formal commitment is appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Contracts exist for reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Agreements matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in personal change, forced commitment can create beautiful sentences with no roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A reluctant:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cFine. I promise.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">may be weaker than:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m not ready yet.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least the second one is true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Public Commitment Has Power<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Telling another person:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m doing this.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">can strengthen action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Writing it down can help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Putting something on the calendar can help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Making an appointment can help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paying the registration fee can help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These actions move commitment from thought into the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But use them carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is not to trap someone into continuing a bad decision because they announced it publicly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commitment should support agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not imprison it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask What They Are Willing to Commit To<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone wants a large change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m going to exercise every day.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat are you confident you&#8217;re actually willing to commit to?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThree days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three honest days are stronger than seven ceremonial ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Build with real material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Small Promise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People sometimes believe a commitment must be impressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cTomorrow I will open the application.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cTonight I will put the number in my phone.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cFor one week I will turn my phone off during dinner.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A small promise kept teaches something important:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>My words can become actions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Become the Keeper of Their Commitment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone tells you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m going to start Monday.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuesday arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You immediately become:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Inspector of Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe they wanted accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask beforehand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cDo you want me to check in with you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If yes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If no:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their commitment remains theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Helping someone choose does not automatically appoint you supervisor of the choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When the Commitment Breaks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI said I&#8217;d call. I didn&#8217;t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avoid:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSo much for that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe avoidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe the plan was unrealistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe circumstances changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe they changed their mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A broken commitment contains information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inspect it before turning it into character judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recommitment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cDo you still want to do it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat needs to change this time?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the original plan failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not the goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adjust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commitment is not valuable because it remains frozen forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is valuable because it organizes action around something the person has chosen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changing Your Mind Is Allowed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person can make a sincere commitment and later discover:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wrong road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Changed values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unexpected cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are allowed to reconsider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commitment is not a blood oath to your previous self.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Integrity sometimes means keeping a promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Integrity sometimes means acknowledging:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I would not make this promise now.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then dealing responsibly with whatever consequences follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Yes That Has Weight<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can often hear the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI should.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ve been thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
