class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The intention is real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But intention is still made of air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually the spell needs a body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Land of Soon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans accomplish extraordinary amounts of work in a mysterious country called:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Soon.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ll call them soon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ll start exercising soon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ll fix the website soon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ll have that conversation soon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soon has remarkable weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing ever seems to happen there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage eventually asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat does soon mean?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Desire to Action<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier change may sound like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI want to.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think I could.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI need to.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not before the person is ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But once they begin choosing movement, specificity becomes useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask for the First Visible Move<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m going to look for another job.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not immediately build their entire career strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat&#8217;s the first thing you&#8217;ll actually do?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUpdate my r\u00e9sum\u00e9.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat&#8217;s the first part of that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFind the old file.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is an action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open laptop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Find file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spell has hands now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Make It Observable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m going to work on myself.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Impossible to observe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat would I see you doing differently?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;d stop answering messages when I&#8217;m angry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More specific:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen I&#8217;m angry, I&#8217;ll wait thirty minutes before replying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now something exists that can actually happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Give It a Time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;ll call my sister.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen tomorrow?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAfter work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now tomorrow has a doorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not about controlling the person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is about preventing intentions from dissolving into undefined time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Give It a Place<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Context matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ll stretch every day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen I get out of bed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ll read more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOn the couch after dinner instead of opening my phone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the desired action has been attached to a location and moment already present in the person&#8217;s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spell has coordinates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If This, Then That<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A useful form is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf X happens, I will do Y.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I feel myself getting angry:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I will stop typing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I miss Monday&#8217;s workout:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I will go Tuesday instead.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If they don&#8217;t answer by Friday:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I will send one follow-up.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I want takeout:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I will check whether I have food at home first.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The future contains predictable obstacles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Give some of them instructions in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plan for the Dragon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans often make plans as though Future Them will live in a world without fatigue, temptation, children, traffic, headaches, bad moods, or Tuesdays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Tuesday arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat is most likely to get in the way?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ll be tired.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat do you want to do when you&#8217;re tired?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWalk ten minutes instead of skipping completely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The obstacle has been included in the plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Make the Plan Survive a Bad Day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A plan that only works when someone is motivated is not much of a plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ll write for two hours every morning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happens on the bad morning?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat&#8217;s the minimum version that still counts?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTen minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the habit has a survival form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every spell needs maximum power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the goal is simply keeping the flame lit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask Who Needs to Know<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some actions become easier when another person is involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWould it help if anyone knew you were doing this?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy friend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy partner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy coach.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All legitimate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accountability is useful for some people and irritating for others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not prescribe an audience automatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask What They Need<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A plan may require resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A babysitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A phone number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A quiet room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat do you need before you can take the first step?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the answer reveals that the first step is actually acquiring the missing resource.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Build Their Plan for Them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want to start walking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You respond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGreat. Wake up at six, walk three miles, buy these shoes, track your steps, download this app\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whose plan is this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat kind of walking would actually fit your life?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTwenty minutes after dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their plan is more likely to survive their life because it was designed inside their life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Offer Structure When Wanted<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI have no idea how to start.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWant me to help you break it down?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Build together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversation is collaborative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Autonomy does not mean leaving someone alone with a blank sheet of paper because you&#8217;re afraid to make suggestions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The First Step Should Be Embarrassingly Possible<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People love heroic first steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Run five miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Write ten pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apply to twenty jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Completely reorganize the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the heroic first step becomes the only step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try smaller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open the document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Put the shoes by the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Find three job listings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clean one shelf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Send one message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI said I&#8217;d train every morning, but mornings aren&#8217;t working.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Move it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI thought I&#8217;d call, but I realized I need to write down what I want to say first.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adaptation is not failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Difference Between Planning and Pressure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be careful when asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSo when are you going to do it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on tone, this can become:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fake commitment helps nobody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mage&#8217;s
