{"id":725,"date":"2026-08-17T19:55:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T19:55:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=725"},"modified":"2026-08-18T22:11:20","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T22:11:20","slug":"show-them-their-own-footprints","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=725","title":{"rendered":"Show Them Their Own Footprints"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone stands at the bottom of a mountain and says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can&#8217;t do this.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can cheer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou absolutely can!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can give a speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou&#8217;re stronger than you know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or you can point behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou climbed the last mountain.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Confidence Likes Evidence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Encouragement feels good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Evidence is stronger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m terrible at difficult conversations.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You remember something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat about when you talked to your brother last month?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was different.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat made you able to do it then?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the person has to inspect their own history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI prepared what I wanted to say.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Self-Efficacy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Self-efficacy is the belief:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I can perform the actions required here.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything will work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I will definitely succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those are different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person can believe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can make the call.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">without believing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThey will say yes.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This distinction matters enormously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Confidence in action is possible even when outcomes remain uncertain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Promise the Outcome<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone is terrified about an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re definitely going to get the job.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not know that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou know the material, you&#8217;ve prepared, and you&#8217;ve handled interviews before. You can walk into that room prepared.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That promise is smaller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And much more defensible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask About Previous Success<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the easiest ways to find evidence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHave you ever done anything like this before?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat helped?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then widen the search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHave you handled anything that required similar skills?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps they have never started a business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But they have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Managed a household.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organized events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Worked with customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kept records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learned difficult systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solved emergencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exact quest may be new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stats are not necessarily zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Break the Spell of \u201cI&#8217;ve Never\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;ve never done this before.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">True.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every competence has a first day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat part of it do you already know how to do?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know the technical side.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat part is new?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFinding clients.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I have never built a business<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">has become:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I need to learn client acquisition.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much smaller monster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shrink the Task Until Ability Appears<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can&#8217;t write a book.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can you write a page?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can you write another tomorrow?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The giant creature called <strong>WRITE A BOOK<\/strong> may be made of hundreds of much smaller creatures called <strong>WRITE A PAGE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Self-efficacy often increases when the task becomes correctly sized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask for the First Move<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat part of this feels doable?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLooking up the number.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSending one email.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWalking around the block.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Change does not become illegitimate because the first movement looks unimpressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A door opens one inch before it opens three feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Borrowed Confidence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes someone genuinely cannot see their own capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can lend perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;ve watched you learn systems much harder than this.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou don&#8217;t seem confident yet, but I have seen you stay with problems until you understand them.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are not demanding they feel confident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are offering evidence from your vantage point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may borrow it for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask Them What You See<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A beautiful question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat would someone who knows you well say you&#8217;re good at that might help here?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This lets them borrow another observer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy sister would say I&#8217;m stubborn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stubbornness has entered the workshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps today we call it persistence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Failure Contains Evidence Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone tried before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They conclude:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSee? I can&#8217;t do it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or perhaps the failed attempt contains information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat worked at all?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI kept it going for three weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat helped during those three weeks?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI had a schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The failure has produced a usable component.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not everything inside a failed attempt failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask What They Learned<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another spell:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat do you know now that you didn&#8217;t know the first time?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI tried to do too much.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI need help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMornings don&#8217;t work for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI need to prepare food ahead of time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now attempt two is not attempt one repeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage has field notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Not Turn Strength Into Obligation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be careful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;ve survived worse than this.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">True perhaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But survival is not a debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone having endured terrible things does not mean they must enthusiastically endure another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strength is evidence of capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not a command to keep suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the strongest thing someone can do is refuse another mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Confidence Can Be Low and Action Can Still Happen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People often think:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>First I become confident.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I act.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Frequently the order is reversed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone acts while uncertain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The action works well enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Confidence grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person may say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m only thirty percent sure I can do this.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe thirty percent is enough to make one phone call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not need ten-out-of-ten confidence to take a one-out-of-ten step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use the Evidence Honestly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not manufacture a heroic biography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If someone has never shown reliability in this area, do not say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;ve always been incredibly disciplined.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The furniture knows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;ve struggled with consistency before. What would need to be different this time?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Confidence built on fantasy collapses quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Confidence built on accurate preparation can survive contact with reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Resources Count<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ability is not only internal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can&#8217;t do this alone.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who said alone was required?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat support would make it possible?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Childcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A checklist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A professional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Self-efficacy does not mean becoming a solitary superhero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knowing how to obtain help is itself a capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Let Them Say It<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don&#8217;t think I can.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of immediately contradicting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat makes you think you might be able to?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may sit quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
