Sometimes you actually know something useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This creates a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because knowing something useful produces an almost supernatural urge to immediately tell everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone mentions a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your mind lights up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I KNOW THIS ONE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have a map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before running into their house waving it\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

knock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Information Can Create Resistance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Imagine someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’m thinking about starting a garden.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You know gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Immediately:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou need raised beds. Don’t use that soil. You need compost. Start with herbs. Tomatoes need\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The person has said eight words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have become an agricultural weather event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe they already gardened for ten years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe they only wanted basil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe they live on the fourteenth floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Information is useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But usefulness depends partly on timing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Elicit\u2013Provide\u2013Elicit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is a simple structure used in motivational interviewing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elicit.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Provide.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elicit.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

First:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Find out what the person already knows or wants to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Offer relevant information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask what they make of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information enters the conversation without taking over the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

First: Elicit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Suppose someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’ve been thinking about changing careers.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of immediately delivering your knowledge:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat have you already looked into?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’ve researched certification requirements, talked to two people in the field, and compared salaries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You just avoided explaining six things they already know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Ask What They Want<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Another useful question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat would be helpful to know?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps they do not need your entire map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They need one road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat does the training cost?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Answer that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not begin with the geopolitical history of the profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Ask Permission<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When you have information they did not request:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWould it be useful if I told you something I’ve seen work?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan I share something I know about that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This can sound overly formal if used constantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep it natural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWant a thought?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan I tell you something interesting about that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know a little about this if you want it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A tiny knock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Then: Provide<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once invited, give the information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preferably without burying the person beneath it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne thing worth knowing is that the certification usually takes about six months, and some employers will pay for it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not need to empty the entire library onto the table because someone opened one book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Information Is Not Command<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Compare:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou need to get the certification first.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOne route is getting certified first. Another is finding an employer who trains people internally.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the person has information rather than an instruction disguised as information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This matters especially when multiple reasonable options exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Then: Elicit Again<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Here is the part people often forget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After giving information, return the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat do you make of that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow does that fit with what you were thinking?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDoes any of that change how you’re looking at it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now you discover whether the information was actually useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat makes it sound much more possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSix months is longer than I can manage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information landed differently than you expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Lecture Problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Without the final elicitation, providing information easily becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You explain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMake sense?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYep.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who knows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhich part of that seems most relevant to your situation?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now they have to interact with the information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The map becomes theirs to inspect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Correcting Misinformation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes someone believes something factually wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may need to correct it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, you can preserve collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWould you mind if I showed you what I found?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe current policy actually says applications stay open until Friday.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow does that affect your plan?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Correction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No humiliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Useful movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

When Permission Is Unnecessary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Do not become ridiculous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat time does the store close?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWould you be open to receiving some information about operating hours?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tell them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The structure is useful when advice or information might influence a personal decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not when someone asks where the bathroom is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Expertise Can Still Be Expertise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Collaborative conversation does not require pretending you know nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are the mechanic and the engine is about to destroy itself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo not drive this car.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are the surgeon and something is medically urgent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are responsible for safety:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Say what needs saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mage does not hide behind conversational elegance when direct information is necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But many ordinary conversations are not emergencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is time to knock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Ask What They Already Know<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This question alone prevents enormous amounts of wasted explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat have you heard about it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat do you already know?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat have you tried?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat did they tell you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now you know where to begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teaching works better when you know which page the other person is already reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Correct Without Taking the Wheel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI heard you need ten thousand dollars to start.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You know that isn’t necessarily true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are actually cheaper routes. I’ve seen people start for much less depending on how they do it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWould that change anything for you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes. Money was the main thing stopping me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new road appeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But they still choose whether to walk it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Let Them Reject the Map<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You offer excellent information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They understand it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah. I still don’t want to do that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may ask why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may clarify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But eventually:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Information does not create obligation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A map can show the shortest route through the mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The traveler may prefer the coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Mage’s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The next time you feel the sentence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat you need to understand is\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

forming in your mouth\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat do you already know about it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWant to hear what I know?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If yes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Give the useful piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not every piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then return the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat do you think?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That final question matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It tells the other person:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information entered your world. Your judgment still lives there.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knowledge is powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advice can be powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expertise can save enormous amounts of suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bring the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bring the lantern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bring the field notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just remember that another person’s mind is not an empty room waiting for you to furnish it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before entering with all your equipment\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n
