A person says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy family is the most important thing in my life.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’ve worked every weekend for the last four months.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not pounce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, obviously your family isn’t that important.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is one way to start a completely different conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, place the two statements beside each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Two Maps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most people carry at least two maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One describes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The life I want to live.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other describes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The life I am currently living.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes they match reasonably well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes they appear to have been printed for different continents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Change often begins when a person can see the distance between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Discrepancy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In motivational interviewing, developing discrepancy<\/strong> means helping someone notice the difference between their values, goals, or desired future and their current behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The important word is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

helping.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not prosecuting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are not proving hypocrisy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are making a contrast visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Mirror, Not the Hammer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Suppose someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want to get out of debt.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’ve been ordering food almost every night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hammer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat’s why you’re broke.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mirror:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSaving money is important to you, and at the same time takeout has become a pretty regular expense.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow do those fit together for you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now they get to examine the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Let Them Notice It<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The strongest discrepancy is often the one the person states themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat matters most to you about being healthy?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want enough energy to play with my kids.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow does your current routine affect that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They answer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’m exhausted all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You did not accuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They connected the points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Values Make Better North Stars Than Shame<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Compare:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou should exercise because you’re out of shape.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou said being able to hike with your daughter matters to you. How does your current routine fit with that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One pushes from behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other points toward something ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shame says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Move because you are unacceptable here.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Values say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Move because there is somewhere you care about going.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very different fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Contradiction Does Not Mean Dishonesty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Someone values family and works constantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That does not necessarily mean:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They lied about valuing family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps they also value:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Providing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe working constantly is their attempt to serve the very family they are missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human contradictions often contain competing virtues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look carefully before declaring one side fraudulent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Ask About the Gap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Useful questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow close is your current life to the life you described wanting?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhere do you see the biggest gap?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat are you doing now that moves you toward that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat pulls you away from it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These questions create orientation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The person may discover that some areas are already aligned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Name those too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Gap Can Be Small<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not every discrepancy requires a life revolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want to be more present with my family.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Current behavior:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Checks work email during dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Possible change:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phone stays in another room for forty minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the distance between maps is not an ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is six feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Don’t Exaggerate the Gap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’d like to read more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not respond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYet you spend your entire life staring at screens.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps they read three books last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accuracy matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A distorted mirror is not useful merely because it points in the direction you prefer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Notice Alignment Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Discrepancy work can become strangely negative if all you ever look for is failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhere are you already living according to what matters to you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI always make breakfast with my kids.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now perhaps the question is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do I become a completely different person?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do I extend something I’m already doing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much more workable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Person Chooses the Map<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is a subtle danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You decide what their values should<\/em> be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then measure them against those values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou should care more about your career.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou should want a relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou should prioritize family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those are your maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discrepancy only becomes meaningful when the destination actually belongs to the person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask what matters to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then remember the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

When Values Conflict<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want freedom.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want stability.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Current life provides stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very little freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discrepancy is real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So is the achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not erase one value to serve another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYour life gives you much of the stability you wanted, but not much of the freedom. How are you feeling about that trade?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the real question appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why aren’t you living your values?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which value needs more room now?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Hypocrisy Trap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is an ugly pleasure in catching someone contradicting themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAha! You said family matters, but look what you’re doing.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This usually produces defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the person is explaining why their behavior is reasonable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may even convince themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You wanted reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You summoned a lawyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avoid the courtroom when a mirror will do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Put Time on the Map<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Someone wants to become a writer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They write twenty minutes a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No accusation needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWriting matters a lot to you. How much space does it currently have in your week?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlmost none.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow do you feel seeing those two things together?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because discomfort is the goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because the map became visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Discrepancy Can Reveal That Nothing Needs Changing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI feel like I should be more ambitious.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat kind of life do you actually want?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They describe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enough money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time with family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quiet evenings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then you examine their current life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They already have most of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the discrepancy was not between their values and their life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was between their life and someone else’s definition of success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mirror works both ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it reveals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are already closer than you thought.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Mage’s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Listen for statements about what matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI care about\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe kind of person I want to be\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat’s most important to me\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, when relevant, place them beside the current pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEarlier you said\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd right now\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not announce the verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not tell them what the contrast means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow do those fit together for you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then let the person look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One map shows the direction they say they want to travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other shows the road beneath their feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither needs to be burned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither needs to be hidden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes change begins with nothing more dramatic than spreading both maps across the same table\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and noticing they point to different places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
