{"id":717,"date":"2026-08-17T19:50:44","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T19:50:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=717"},"modified":"2026-08-18T22:11:20","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T22:11:20","slug":"borrow-eyes-from-tomorrow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=717","title":{"rendered":"Borrow Eyes From Tomorrow"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans are remarkably bad at seeing the shape of a road while standing on one inch of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today is loud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today has bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today is tired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cJust get through today.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reasonable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But some decisions cannot be understood properly from this close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the Mage needs to borrow another pair of eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The eyes of the person standing farther down the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Future Question<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can tolerate this.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps they can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf nothing changes, what does this look like a year from now?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That question does something unusual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It takes the current pattern and stretches it across time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The person may answer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProbably the same.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWorse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don&#8217;t want to think about that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially that last one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tolerable Is Not Free<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many situations survive because their cost arrives slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten dollars here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One hour there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One argument every weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little less sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little more resentment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little less movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing dramatic enough to force a decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But extend the pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the accumulated cost becomes visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf this continues for five years, what does it cost you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes that is a much different question than:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cCan you handle it today?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visit the Better Road Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Future thinking should not only summon catastrophe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSuppose you make the change and it goes reasonably well. What might life look like?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not fantasy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reasonably well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;d have evenings again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;d sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;d see my friends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;d make less money, but I wouldn&#8217;t dread Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the possible future has texture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Change is no longer merely:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Stop doing this.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Move toward that.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask Future You<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A useful spell:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat do you think future you would wish you had done?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not prophecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Future You is unavailable for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the question changes perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person may say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think I&#8217;d regret not trying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think I&#8217;d wish I&#8217;d stayed another year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer reveals something about the present person&#8217;s values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Borrow the Deathbed Carefully<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a dramatic version:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat will you think about this on your deathbed?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Occasionally useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Frequently excessive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not need to summon mortality because someone is deciding whether to join a pottery class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try six months first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The future has many distances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Choose one appropriate to the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Walk Backward<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage can also travel the other direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;ve always been like this.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cAlways?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell\u2026 no.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhen was it different?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCollege.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat was different then?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI had friends nearby.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI walked everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wasn&#8217;t working nights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the problem has acquired variables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Look for Exceptions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can never stick to anything.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than arguing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHave you ever stuck with something longer than you expected?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI trained for that race.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat helped?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy friend did it with me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe had a schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;d already paid the entry fee.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The past has just produced ingredients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your Previous Self Left Notes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People have already solved versions of many problems they encounter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not permanently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But partially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhen you&#8217;ve handled something like this well before, what were you doing?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was sleeping more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI asked for help sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI had a routine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI stopped trying to fix everything at once.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are field notes from an earlier expedition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Romanticize the Past<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is another trap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI just want to be who I used to be.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But perhaps the old life had costs too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Memory edits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nostalgia applies excellent lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat do you miss about that version of your life?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not necessarily:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHow do we recreate it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe what they miss is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Physical movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those things might be rebuilt differently now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The past may contain clues without being a destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Preferred Future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf this problem were significantly better six months from now, what would you notice first?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beautiful question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone might say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wouldn&#8217;t check my phone first thing in the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy wife and I would laugh again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;d stop thinking about work while eating dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These answers are concrete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They reveal what \u201cbetter\u201d actually means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Let the Future Become Specific<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want to be happier.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What does Tuesday look like?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What time do you wake up?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where are you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who is around?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What are you no longer doing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What are you doing instead?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The more specific the future becomes, the easier it is to see whether current choices point toward it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Discrepancy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is where the spell becomes powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cBeing present for my family is the most important thing to me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI work every weekend because I want the extra money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reflect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cFamily time is one of your highest priorities, and the current schedule is taking most weekends away from them.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discrepancy belongs to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSee the contradiction?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They probably do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let the mirror work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Values Are Compasses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Future questions often reveal values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat would you regret losing?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat do you hope your children remember?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat kind of work would feel worth doing?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat would make the risk worthwhile?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These questions do not dictate a destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They reveal north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A compass cannot tell you which mountain pass is safest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it can tell you when you&#8217;ve been walking south for three years while insisting you want to go north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Weaponize Their Future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone tells you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI want to be a good father.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later you say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf you were a good father, you&#8217;d do what I&#8217;m telling you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have taken their value and turned it into a leash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Values should help people orient themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not make them easier to control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage guards carefully against using someone&#8217;s deepest commitments as handles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sometimes Tomorrow Says Stay<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not assume future thinking always favors change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person considers abandoning a difficult project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat do you think you&#8217;ll feel six months from now if you stop today?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRelieved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then stopping may deserve serious consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ll wish I&#8217;d finished.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spell does not contain the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It changes the viewing
